Job Summary

The Associate Supervisor, Recreation position is responsible for planning, implementing, and supervising day-to-day operations of recreation programs, activities, and events for youth, adults, and seniors.

Minimum Qualifications

• 21 years of age or older with a valid U.S. driver’s license.
• Associates degree in a related field, OR an equivalent combination of related education and experience. 
• Two (2) years of experience in programming, planning, and supervision, six (6) months of which must be supervisory. 
• CPR and First Aid certification within six (6) months of hire.

The successful applicant must pass a required pre-employment background check, MVR, drug test, and subsequent mandatory checks in accordance with current District policy requirements.

Preferred but not required:

• Experience working with youth.
• Professional level proficiency in the Spanish language. 
• Bachelor’s degree in Parks and Recreation, Leisure Services, Physical Education, Event Management, Health and Fitness, Commercial Recreation, or related a field.

Essential Functions

• Hire, train, evaluate, and schedule seasonal and part-time employees for assigned programs under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor.
• Maintain records of all necessary staff certifications; ensure they are current and in compliance with established standards.
• Plan and coordinate recreation programs and events, including promotion, registration, staff and coach development, and schedule creation and distribution.
• Promote all fitness programs and classes in collaboration with Community Outreach staff and collect patron feedback.
• Evaluate assigned programs and events upon their conclusion.
• Inventory and ensure proper condition of all equipment.
• Maintain presentation and cleanliness of fields, facilities, and storage.
• Resolve safety and maintenance issues; report larger maintenance issues in a timely manner.
• Maintain control of participants, coaches, and spectators.
• Coordinate with all programs regarding needs, changes, and questions.  
• Assist management with continual monitoring of revenue and expenses to maintain budget; assist with preparing annual budget for assigned programs and events.
• Recommend and review purchases for assigned programs and events.
• Assist with applying for grants.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

Knowledge of:

• Principles of supervision, scheduling, and event planning.
• Field dimensions and athletic field equipment.
• Training methods in a wide variety of sports. 
• Related OSHA safety standards, current Safety Data Sheet (SDS) procedures, and bloodborne pathogens.
• Sequential skill development, rules, training of coaches, and team development skills for sports.
• Computers and Microsoft Office applications.
• Developing recreational day camp programs during summer and school vacations for elementary and secondary school-age children.

Skill and Ability to:

• Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Organize, delegate responsibilities, and establish program goals.
• Good character and integrity while providing and accepting supervision and guidance.
• Use sound judgment and be appropriately assertive with patrons when enforcing the rules.

• Plan and execute league and tournament schedules, including scheduling officials and reserving facilities.

Working Conditions and Aptitudes

• Duties are performed indoors and outdoors, occasionally involving excessive temperatures and inclement weather.
• Duties primarily performed in a public setting requiring constant interaction with a variety of people.
• Manual dexterity and coordination; high degree of mental and visual alertness.
• Operation of motor vehicles on public roadways.
• Work a variety of shifts including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays; hours vary depending on specific program needs.

Physical Requirements
