Job Description - Associate Therapist


Associate Therapist Position Summary

Positive Sobriety Institute (PSI) specializes in treating substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health for a wide range of professionals, including physicians, attorneys, and executives, in high-stress, high-accountability roles.   

The Associate Therapist is a dynamic clinical role designed to support multiple facets of PSI’s PHP and IOP treatment programs, including day, evening, and weekend services. This role blends clinical care, admissions, administrative coordination, compliance & quality assurance, and team collaboration to ensure high-quality, client-centered treatment delivery. The ideal candidate is flexible, detail-oriented, and skilled in both individual and group work.

This is a full-time salary position. Master’s degree in clinical mental health, social work, or related field required; LPC, LSW, or CADC preferred. The position requires knowledge about substance use disorders, trauma, psychiatric diagnoses, and familiarity with healthcare professionals (particularly physicians). The therapist collaborates with a team of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and counselors.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

  • Conduct comprehensive intake evaluations for new admissions and assist with treatment planning.
  • Facilitate therapy groups across PHP, IOP, and Evening IOP.
  • Primary staff member to provide group coverage, including for staff PTO, call-outs, or program expansion for PHP, IOP, Evening IOP, and Saturday programming.
  • Primary staff member to provide coverage for treatment planning and case management services. 
  • Provide individual therapy to patients as clinically indicated and based on program needs.
  • Offer crisis intervention support in collaboration with the clinical team.
  • Support case management tasks, including coordination of care, referrals, and discharge planning.

Program Support & Coverage

  • Provide coverage for the Office Coordinator, including patient check-ins, billing, scheduling, administrative communication, and general operations.
  • Act as a liaison between PSI clinical team and Utilization Review (UR) for timely updates and documentation needs.
  • Collaborate with the Admissions Team to ensure smooth onboarding of new clients and accurate EMR documentation.
  • Provide coverage for admissions team as needed. 
  • Support the MCAP (Multidisciplinary Clinical Assessment Program) as needed.

Quality Assurance & EMR

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the EMR system for all client interactions.
  • Participate in clinical documentation review processes to ensure compliance and quality standards.
  • Assist with chart audits and flag missing documentation for follow-up.
  • Review team documentation to identify gaps or inconsistencies, and provide feedback as needed.
  • Coordinate with the Compliance Team to ensure documentation standards, regulatory requirements, and Joint Commission guidelines are consistently met.

  • This is a full-time position working the hours required to meet job expectations. 
  • Scheduled and unscheduled performance reviews are given according to Company policies.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education – Minimum master’s degree from an accredited College or University in counseling psychology, social work, behavioral science, or related field required. 
  • Licensure – Provisionally licensed as an?LSW, LPC, or CADC in the state of Illinois preferred. 
  • Experience – Minimum one to two (1-2) years professional experience with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health diagnoses.

  • Must be proficient in computer usage and electronic medical recordkeeping (EMR)

Competencies

  • Provides professional counselling and treatment in accordance with treatment plan and follows through as required. Collaborates with full treatment team as needed. 
  • Uses compassionate and professional patient care. 
  • Demonstrates mastery of appropriate diagnostic, record keeping, and patient status documentation software applications by including all elements of EMR in documentation progress notes. 
  • Uses thorough assessment skills (i.e. history, probing for signs and symptoms, etc.) to make accurate decisions on seriousness of condition and appropriate treatment options. 
  • Demonstrates attention to detail in completing assignments with minimal supervisory intervention. 
  • Effectively collaborates with members of the care team. 
  • Provides advice and support for patients to make informed decisions about their rights. 
  • Completes work consistently with the highest respect and dignity for those being treated. 
  • Acts and performs with sound job knowledge, judgment, and problem-solving skills in issuing feedback/instructions to others. 
  • Uses active listening skills that are sensitive to individual and cultural communication differences. 
  • Responds to emergencies using proper judgment. 
  • Self identifies and pursues/supports continuous learning opportunities for self and others. 

Schedule / Benefits

  • Core Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00am–4:00pm
  • Evening IOP Coverage: 5:30pm–8:30pm (as scheduled)
  • Saturday Program Coverage: 8:30am–12:30pm (as scheduled)
  • Flexibility is required to provide coverage for evening and Saturday programming, as well as to adjust for staffing needs.
  • Salary starting at $55,000
  • Benefits package including PTO, sick time, medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance and 401(k) (non-matching)
