About the Opportunity A leading infrastructure general contractor is seeking an experienced Assistant Project Manager to support complex public works and utility projects across Southern California. This role is ideal for professionals with proven experience in underground utilities, particularly in wet utilities, trenching, and underground piping.
This is not a vertical construction position. Candidates with backgrounds solely in commercial or residential building (vertical construction) will not be considered. The selected individual will work closely with field operations and senior leadership teams to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, and within budget while exceeding client expectations.
Key Responsibilities ● Support and coordinate field operations in partnership with Project Superintendents and Engineers ● Track project schedule, scope, and costs, identifying risks and implementing solutions ● Communicate with clients, municipalities, utility companies, subcontractors, and internal teams ● Ensure compliance with contract requirements, safety standards (including Cal/OSHA), and environmental regulations ● Lead project documentation, change orders, and progress reporting ● Assist with mentoring Project Engineers and junior staff to foster growth and development ● Participate in internal project reviews and financial updates
Qualifications ● Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent experience ● 7+ years of field experience in heavy civil or underground construction ● Hands-on experience with underground piping, trenching, and wet utility installation in California ● Familiarity with public works processes, agency coordination, and Cal/OSHA trench safety standards ● OSHA 30 (Cal/OSHA) certification preferred or willingness to obtain ● Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills ● Ability to navigate active construction job sites and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
