Job Description - Astronaut Rescue & Recovery Operations Support Specialist

Job Summary:
Alluvionic is seeking an Astronaut Rescue and Recovery Operations Support Specialist onsite at Johnson Space Center, TX. This full-time position supports the 1st Air Force (1AF), Detachment 3 and serves as a liaison between United States Space Command, 1 AF, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Artemis Program, Commercial Crew Program (CCP), and Soyuz Program.

Clearance Required:  Yes – Top Secret/SCI Clearance
*This is an onsite position.*

Key Responsibilities:

In collaboration and coordination with the 1 AF, Det 3 liaison officer, support the employment of search and rescue aviation assets to facilitate astronaut rescue following either an Artemis or CCP contingency land landing or water landing as well as astronaut and crew module recovery following Artemis nominal end-of-mission.

Education and Work Experience 
Basic Qualifications:
  • 10+ years of experience in Department of Defense (DoD) Survival or Personnel Recovery training and operations.
  • Previous experience in either rated officer (pilot or navigator), Guardian Angel (officer or enlisted or Special Operations (any Service, officer or enlisted).
  • Experience working in an Air Operations Center or Joint Personnel Recovery Center or Personnel Recovery Coordination Center or Major Command (or other Service equivalent) staff.
  • Possess an expert knowledge of military combat aviation or ground rescue instructions, tactics, techniques and procedures.
  • Ability to assist collaborating with mission partners to integrate common Air Force combat rescue aircraft tactics, techniques and procedures into contingency astronaut rescue operations.
  • Ability to collaborate with mission partners to modify or update strategies for astronaut short- and long-term search and rescue plans and communications.
  • Ability to collaborate with mission partners to develop documents, processes, courseware and plans to train aircrews on mission-unique astronaut search and rescue procedures in multiple environments.
  • Ability to collaborate with mission partners to develop documents, processes, courseware and plans to train astronauts how to affect their own rescue when the DoD, other government agencies or international partners are tasked with the rescue mission.
  • Ability to facilitate documenting, refining and implementing processes and procedures to manage risk associated with aviation and astronaut rescue operations.
  • Ability to collaborate with Mission partners to determine interoperability of DoD rescue aircraft with air deployable rescue equipment associated with Artemis and CCP crew module and associated astronaut personal survival equipment.
  • Ability to collaborate with mission partners to provide recommendations to improve or optimize communication interoperability between rescue aircraft and associated crew module.
  • Ability to collaborate with mission partners to develop plans, procedures and processes in conjunction with Artemis nominal end-of-mission recovery.
  • Ability to collaborate with mission partners to develop plans, procedures and processes in conjunction with Artemis contingency crew module retrieval.
  • Ability to Facilitate 1 AF, Det 3 training by assisting reception, logistics and bed-down efforts prior to and during unit-led training and exercise activities at Johnson Space Center.
  • Ability to help plan and participate in training, development test and exercise events for rescue and recovery.
  • Ability to provide command and control recommendations for postured alert rescue forces.
  • Ability to assist on-console activities at Mission Control Center – Houston during mission execution activities in coordination with the 1 AF, Det 3 Support Operations Center Director.
  • Ability to provide subject matter expertise and advice to NASA and DoD decision makers in support of mission execution activities.
  • Ability to work independently to plan and complete assignments on time, ensure products are thorough, logical, meet objectives, and are grammatically correct, analyze complex problems, and develop and articulate recommended plans and objectives that lead to resolution within existing policy or instruction guidance
  • Ability to produce high quality products and provide high quality recommendations that are consistent with a fiscally constrained mission environment
  • Ability to work occasional 24/7 shift work, including weekends and holidays

Additional Qualifications:
  • Preferred: BA or BS degree
  • Preferred: Previously served at the Joint Personnel Recovery Agency, Joint Search and Rescue Center, or Rescue Coordination Center.
  • Possession of excellent oral and written communication skills
  • An ability to interact with military, contractors, and interagency personnel to build teams and maintain good working relationships
