The mission of Democracy Prep Public Schools is to educate responsible citizen-scholars for success in a college of their choice and a life of active citizenship. As the Athletic Director, you will lead and oversee a comprehensive athletics program. Your leadership will ensure that our student-athletes thrive both on and off the field—meeting academic expectations, competing with integrity, and learning skills that prepare them for college and life. You will coordinate teams, manage coaches, and promote a strong culture of safety, achievement, and community across all athletics activities.

Who You Are

• A passionate educator and leader with a strong belief in the role athletics can play in scholar growth, engagement, and college success.


• A self-aware and equity-driven teammate committed to building inclusive, identity-affirming experiences for student-athletes across grade levels.


• An experienced coach or Physical Education professional with at least 5 years of experience in coaching, student-athlete development, or athletic programming.


• A strong adult manager with the ability to hire, support, and develop coaches who serve scholars across elementary, middle, and high school.


• A strategic and detail-oriented organizer who can coordinate multiple teams, schedules, and facility needs simultaneously.


• A clear and compassionate communicator who builds strong relationships with students, families, staff, and the wider community.


• A Bachelor's degree holder (required), with experience working in a school-based setting preferred.

What You’ll Do

• Lead and manage the full athletics program at Democracy Prep.


• Hire, coach, and evaluate part-time coaching staff across all grade bands. 


• Track spending against and adhere to the annual athletics department budget. Participate in school BVA (budget versus actual) meetings as necessary. This includes adhering to stipend assignment, tracking, and approval processes for coaches.


• Develop and implement fundraising opportunities for DP’s athletic programs.


• Plan and coordinate athletic practices, games, and tournaments for multiple teams throughout the year.


• Analyze effectiveness of DP’s Athletic Programs. Create and implement action plans for improvement.


• Prepare reports for school administration and the board of directors (when requested) that include information about scholar participation and performance of DP’s athletic programs. Ensure compliance with the local athletic association and other regulatory bodies, including academic eligibility and health & safety protocols.


• Monitor academic performance and behavior of student-athletes and intervene or support as needed to ensure scholar success in and out of the classroom.


• Support high school culture and community-building by aligning athletics with broader school culture initiatives.


• Advocate for student-athletes who are interested in continuing sports at the collegiate level, with or without scholarships—supporting recruitment, eligibility, and application processes.


• Promote DP’s athletics program through events, community partnerships, and external communications.


• Maintain athletic facilities and ensure that all spaces are safe, clean, and well-equipped.


• Create and enforce safety protocols and supervision structures during practices, games, travel, and team events.

Compensation

Salary range for this position is $105,000-$129,000 and commensurate with equivalent experience in similar roles. Democracy Prep employees are provided with a benefits package that includes medical, vision, and dental insurance, 403b retirement matching, parental leave, a smartphone, and a laptop.
