Capital B is a first-of-its kind national and local nonprofit news organization that serves Black communities across the country. Cofounded by CEO Lauren Williams (former senior vice president and editor-in-chief of Vox) and Chief Audience Officer Akoto Ofori-Atta (former managing editor of The Trace), Capital B has successfully launched three award winning newsrooms. As we continue to grow, we are seeking a tenacious reporter to cover education and the exciting culture of the city’s K-12 schools to join our Atlanta team.
This reporter will put students and parents at the center of their stories to share in our mission to produce excellent community-centered solutions journalism. The ideal candidate will uncover the people, decisions and events that shape schools, track influences that impact these decisions, and analyze their impact on children’s day-to-day lives. Additionally, they will chronicle how new laws and funding affect students, illustrating how legislative changes manifest in the classroom. Vocational schools, the AUC, Georgia State and school systems in surrounding metro areas will also be a focus.
With experience covering education or another social policy area, this reporter should have a command of data and a passion for building a robust and diverse network of sources. Reporter will also cover issues that often intersect with schools, such as child welfare, homelessness, LGBTQ+ awareness and the juvenile justice system.
This role requires a self-directed and proactive approach to produce a mix of daily quick-turn pieces, accountability enterprise projects, examinations of the fun aspects of Atlanta schools and scoop-driven exclusives that engage readers, provoke conversation, hold systems to account and raise the platform’s profile.
This position reports to the Atlanta editor.
