The Attendance Support Specialist ensures that all students are attending school by sending daily login reminders to absent students. The Attendance Support Specialist manages the documentation of excused and planned absences, runs and reviews attendance and truancy reports, prepares truancy communications. This position represents the school if truancy cases go to court.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborates with success coaches and teachers to monitor student attendance trends and inform action plans to increase engagement
- Conducts outreach via phone calls, emails, and auto-dial messages to targeted students/families
- Oversee absence meetings and attendance intervention plans
- Answer questions as they pertain to attendance data i.e. how many hours the student is logging daily, provide support and suggestions in helping to get students on track to ensure they are meeting their minimum daily goals
- Collaborates with school counselors and social workers to assist students when additional student support or agency referrals are needed
- Maintains a variety of attendance records, schedules, and files for the purpose of documenting and/or providing reliable information
- Develops and implements educational workshops related to attendance policies and truancy law for school staff and families
- Provide regular updates for staff on student attendance with targets and strategies for improvement
- Enter attendance in all applicable databases and systems accurately
- Receive, verify, and log absence excuses from parents in accordance with state law defining allowable absences
- Manage communication with parents via email and phone to follow up on reasons for absence and submission of excuses
- Run attendance reports to identify students needing truancy communications
- Prepare and send truancy communications in a timely manner that upholds compliance to state law
- Provide Administration with reports and updates identifying truant students
Skills/Qualifications
- 2+ Years of truancy experience in the K-12 educational setting
- Knowledge of state school attendance laws and other pertinent laws regarding K-12 education
- Bachelor’s Degree Required
- Proficiency in PowerSchool (highly desired), Microsoft Office, and Google Suite Products
- Ability to handle confidential information responsibly and exhibit sound judgment while maintaining that confidentiality
- Demonstrates a reliable, dependable, and trustworthy work ethic
- Ability to manage difficult or emotional client situations
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work well under pressure, effectively prioritizing and executing tasks to meet deadlines consistently
- Customer service oriented
- Ability to learn new technologies and acquire new skills through independent study, professional training, and from more senior team members
- Prior experience working in a school setting preferred
- Ability to work independently and contribute to a team
- Ability to pass federal and state criminal background checks
- Ability to lift 25 lbs
- Ability to travel up 25% of the time
