The primary responsibility of the Automation Technician 3 is to design, build, install and maintain complex machinery and machining system projects from conception to final completion. Typically, the Automation 3 completes tasks of a higher degree of scope and/or complexity compared to the Automation 2. The incumbent must be able to follow general machine shop practices while working under minimal supervision.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Design, build, install and repair complete automation packages, i.e. electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical and gage systems, for control of machine or machine process that will provide desired operation from verbal or written description of how machine or system should operate. Works closely with manufacturing management and engineering to create machinery and machine.
- Recommend operating software or write simple software for devices used, i.e. relay ladder logic
- Provide supervisor with list of parts needed to be ordered; assemble necessary parts for machine or system;
- Test machine or machine system and de-bugs as necessary to ensure proper logical sequence of all functions
- Analyze machine and system failure to determine where problem areas exist; develop and implement corrective action, if necessary
- Instruct individuals in proper operation, set-up maintenance and repair of the machine or system
- Maintain written documentation of entire automated system (electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic), provide hard-copy of documentation for reference
- Design all circuits (electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, communication) by using a computer-aided drafting equipment
- Recommend operating software or write simple programs for devices used, i.e. relay ladder logic, stepper motor commands, analog scaling, etc.
- Order all machine components, checks all parts when received to ensure all are on hand in time to complete project by required date.
- Fabricate simple parts/fixtures, as needed and/or design pieces to be made by tool room
- Assemble, interconnect and install components, sensors, actuators, motors and all associated wiring, tubing, etc.
- Lead, train and develop employees, as necessary.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
- This position does not require any supervisory duties.
WORKING ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
- May be exposed to moderate heat, light dust, fumes, extreme temperatures, noise and hazards such as electrical shock or gases. Some outside assignments could involve exposure to adverse weather conditions. Adequate hearing protection is required for 85 decibels and above.
SCHEDULE:
- 8-hour Night Shift Sunday through Thursday
