Job Description - Auxiliary Systems Subject Matter Expert (AUX SME)

Description

This position is contingent upon contract award

The Auxiliary Systems SME provides auxiliary systems training and assessment.

This position serves as a subject matter expert responsible for supporting fleet readiness, auxiliary systems reliability, maintenance execution, and engineering operations associated with shipboard support systems critical to mission performance and habitability.

The Auxiliary SME supports maintenance and operational teams responsible for auxiliary equipment and systems, provides technical guidance to shipboard personnel and maintenance activities, and ensures compliance with Navy engineering, operational, and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership and oversight for the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of auxiliary engineering systems aboard Navy surface ships and military auxiliary vessels.
  • Support planning, execution, and oversight of organizational-level and depot-level maintenance activities involving auxiliary systems and associated equipment.
  • Serve as subject matter expert for shipboard auxiliary systems including:
    • Diesel engines,
    • Gasoline internal combustion engines,
    • Potable water systems,
    • Compressed air and gas systems,
    • Air conditioning and refrigeration systems,
    • Fuel and lube oil systems, and
    • Ventilation systems.
  • Analyze system performance data, maintenance records, casualty reports, and operational trends to identify improvement opportunities and enhance system reliability.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineering personnel, maintenance teams, and shipboard operators.
  • Coordinate with ship’s force personnel, maintenance activities, government representatives, and technical stakeholders to resolve engineering and maintenance issues.
  • Support development and implementation of maintenance procedures, engineering documentation, and readiness initiatives.
  • Conduct technical assessments, inspections, and operational evaluations of auxiliary systems and equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with Navy engineering standards, maintenance procedures, operational requirements, and safety policies.
  • Prepare technical reports, maintenance assessments, readiness evaluations, and system status updates for leadership review.Provide mentorship and technical support to operations and maintenance personnel supporting mine hunting mission areas.

Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of fifteen (15) years of experience with operations and maintenance of auxiliary systems aboard warships or military auxiliary vessels.
  • Direct operational and maintenance experience within the last five (5) years involving auxiliary equipment and systems currently utilized by the U.S. Navy, including:
    • Diesel engines,
    • Gasoline internal combustion engines,
    • Potable water systems,
    • Compressed air and gas systems,
    • Air conditioning systems,
    • Fuel and lube oil systems, and
    • Ventilation systems.
  • Extensive knowledge of Navy auxiliary systems operations, maintenance practices, troubleshooting procedures, and engineering support requirements.
  • Strong understanding of shipboard engineering operations, maintenance management, and safety requirements.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and technical problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to effectively interface with senior military leadership, civilian personnel, maintenance organizations, and technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience supporting Navy fleet readiness, maintenance assessments, modernization initiatives, or lifecycle sustainment programs.
  • Experience supporting shipyard maintenance, waterfront operations, or engineering support activities.
  • Familiarity with Navy maintenance databases, engineering documentation systems, and technical reporting tools.
  • Experience supporting integrated engineering or readiness support teams.
  • Bachelor’s degree or associate degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, or a related technical field.

Work Environment

  • Work may be performed in office environments, shipboard locations, waterfront operations areas, maintenance facilities, or shipyards.
  • Position may require travel to fleet concentration areas, operational commands, maintenance facilities, and shipboard locations in support of inspections, maintenance activities, and operational readiness efforts.

Security Clearance

  • Active DoD security clearance (Secret or higher) required.
