Backhoe Operator

Description

Basic Function:

Under direct supervision, the Backhoe Operator is responsible for safely operating and maintaining the backhoes and, on occasion, other equipment at the Alta Mesa Project. The Backhoe Operator is responsible for excavating and reclaiming pits, general dirtwork and other tasks as assigned by management. The Backhoe Operator will be expected to work in a productive manner with minimal supervision in the field and at remote locations. 

The position will report directly to the Drilling Foreman on a day to day basis. The position is a full time position.

Duties and Responsibilities:

· Safely and skillfully operate a backhoe, loader or other related construction equipment. 

· Maintain equipment in proper operating condition by performing simple preventive maintenance and repair tasks such as making simple adjustments, replacing minor parts, and lubricating equipment and keeping a clean working environment.

· Works with other drilling support crews or as a laborer when not operating equipment.

· Train others on the proper operation of a backhoe. 

· Evaluates work areas including identifying any buried lines/utilities to ensure the work activities can proceed safely. 

· Accept individual responsibility and accountability for HSE processes within his/her control, his/her personal safety, and the safety of coworkers.  

· Properly use personal protective equipment gloves, safety glasses, rubber boots, coveralls, and respirators.

· Follow safety rules and procedures in all aspects of plant operations including radiation, chemical, and electrical safety.

· Follow all Standard Operating Procedures, Instructions and Safe Work Practices in the execution of the duties of the position.

· Promptly correct or report potential workplace hazards and upset conditions.

· Keep work areas clean at all times.

· Other duties as assigned by management

Requirements

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

· Must possess valid Texas Drivers License.

· Speak, read and write fluently in English. 

· Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally with other employees. 

· Ability to complete associated paperwork and log entries in a legible manner.

· Understand and follow safety rules.

· Work cooperatively with other employees.

· Ability to detect/identify if equipment is not working properly or malfunctions. 

· Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) long distances (more than 20 feet.)

· Work in a variety of weather and field conditions with exposure to the elements.

· Maintain a clean and safe working environment. 

Working Conditions and Physical Activity:

· Possess hearing and eyesight of correction to normal able-bodied level.

· Ability to walk, stand, bend, kneel as the job requires. 

· Ability to climb stairs and ladders as the job requires.

· Climb up and down stairs carrying load of 25 pounds.

· Ability to work outdoors in all weather and field conditions.

· Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) long distances (more than 20feet.)
