Barr-Reeve Community Schools is seeking a passionate, creative, and student-centered Band Director to lead our Middle and High School band programs. POSITION SUMMARY
To plan and deliver rigorous, relevant instrumental music instruction; to facilitate student participation and mastery in middle and high school band programs; to promote school spirit and community engagement through concert and pep band performances; and to develop and sustain leadership within the school community.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Instructional Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver standards-based instruction aligned with Indiana Academic Standards for Music.
- Develop lesson plans and rehearsal strategies appropriate for middle and high school instrumental ensembles.
- Provide differentiated instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners.
- Assess student performance, provide timely feedback, and maintain accurate grading and progress records.
- Maintain a stimulating teaching-learning environment using a variety of instructional tools and techniques.
Program Leadership
- Direct and supervise middle school and high school concert band ensembles.
- Direct and supervise pep band performances at designated athletic events.
- Prepare students for concerts, competitions, community events, school programs, and athletic performances.
- Select appropriate musical repertoire and instructional materials.
- Organize rehearsals, which may include before-school, after-school, evening, or occasional weekend sessions as necessary to meet program needs.
Student Supervision and Conduct
- Maintain appropriate supervision of students at all times, including rehearsals, performances, travel, and extracurricular events.
- Maintain high expectations for student conduct and enforce district policies at all school functions, including athletic events.
Program Management
- Maintain inventory, care, and security of instruments, uniforms, sheet music, and equipment.
- Assist in budget planning and purchasing in accordance with district procedures.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues, and administrators to promote and grow the band program.
Professional Responsibilities
- Attend meetings called by the Superintendent, designee, or principal unless excused.
- Participate in curriculum study groups, committees, and professional development as assigned.
- Maintain records as required by district policy and procedures.
- Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as the Superintendent or designee may assign.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Music Education or related field.
- Valid Indiana Teaching License in Music or eligibility prior to employment.
- Knowledge of instrumental music pedagogy and conducting techniques.
- Ability to effectively manage classroom behavior and supervise students.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
- Frequent standing and conducting for extended periods.
- Ability to hear and distinguish pitch, tone, and balance in rehearsal and performance settings.
- Exposure to moderate to high noise levels during rehearsals, pep band performances, and athletic events.
- Ability to lift, move, and transport instruments and equipment weighing up to approximately 40 pounds.
- Ability to travel with students to performances and events.
- Ability to work evenings and occasional weekends during the school year.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in classrooms, rehearsal spaces, auditoriums, gymnasiums, outdoor venues, and athletic facilities. Noise levels may be elevated during rehearsals and performances.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check as required by Indiana law and compliance with all Board policies and negotiated agreements. This position follows the teacher contract and may include responsibilities beyond the regular school day.
