Job Description - Behavior Intervention Support Specialist- Meadowbrook High

General Description:

Using the Virginia Tiered Systems of Support (VTSS), BISS will provide coaching to schools using evidenced-based interventions, including VTSS Frameworks such as Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS ) to positively impact student needs, staff professional learning, and the culture and climate of the school.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assesses and supports instructional programs in a school setting for students in general education

  • Assists and supports teachers and staff with school-wide behavior programs

  • Provides staff development and works collaboratively with primarily Participate Learning teachers,  paraprofessionals  and  support  staff  to demonstrate best practices, strategies, and techniques to enhance instruction for students with social, communication, behavioral, and learning challenges

  • Assists with the development of functional behavioral assessments and behavioral intervention plans

  • Assists with the design, implementation, and follow-up of behavioral management programs for students to remediate behavioral and social problems, including use of research-based de-escalation skills

  • Develops and conducts professional development activities regarding techniques for remediation of behavioral, social, or personal problems of students

  • Assists schools with the development of student support plans

  • Works effectively and collaboratively with diverse student, staff, and community populations

  • Keeps abreast of evidence-based practices to support the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional outcomes for students

  • Assists schools with using data to select and progress monitor tiered interventions

  • Manages time appropriately to proactively support the needs of schools and the division

  • Maintains up-to-date data on the progress of interventions

  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Budgetary Responsibility:

This position has no budgetary responsibilities.

Report Preparation:

  • Prepares monthly reports to document focus areas for the teaching staff 

  • Submits monthly data reports to the primary evaluator to keep the administrative team aware of needs relative to professional learning, discipline, attendance, and academic needs

  • Prepares other related reports as required

Equipment Operation:

Operates personal computer, basic office equipment, and equipment related to the assigned area

Contacts:

This position has frequent contact with parents, students, and school staff.

Work Direction/Supervision:

This position may provide behavioral intervention guidance to staff, but does not supervise others.

Decision Making:

This position performs the majority of functions independently and seeks supervisor guidance as necessary.

This position has no formal policy-setting responsibilities.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers; reach with

hands and arms; handle paper files, records, computer and equipment controls; talk and hear. The employee is required to stand , walk, and sit. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and depth perception.

Work Environment:

Work is performed in a public school. The noise level is typically moderate.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Demonstrates patience, respect, a receptive attitude towards students of varied age groups and understanding of the specific situation. Utilizes consulting skills to assure implementation and maintenance of intervention plans. Must have a clear understanding of students who have different learning styles.  Must have knowledge of current trends and methodologies used to address the needs of children with behavioral challenges. Must have extensive experience in analyzing, assessing behavior, developing, planning and implementation of behavioral interventions.  Must have skills in evaluation, development and implementation of positive behavior intervention plans.  Knowledge of current accepted best practices utilized in the full continuum of placement options for students with behavioral challenges.  Must have knowledge of data tracking and collection, record management and reporting methods.  Demonstrate understanding of inclusive education and differentiated instruction. Must have expertise in developing and providing staff development activities.  Must have strong technology skills.

Additional Job Requirements:

Postgraduate Professional License, or an advanced degree in social work, counseling, or psychology 


Preferred: Master’s Degree, with a minimum of three years of successful clinical or classroom experience building relationships and working with children with challenging behaviors
