Job Description - BelovED Middle School Academy Dean

BelovED Community Charter School, located in Jersey City, NJ, has been recognized as one of the top charter schools in the state. For 2026, Niche ranked it as the #3 Best K–12 Charter School in New Jersey. It is also noted for being one of the most diverse public schools in the state.

OUR SCHOOL

BelovED Community Charter School (BelovED CCS) is a high performing, college preparatory public charter school located in culturally vibrant Jersey City, New Jersey. Just minutes from Hoboken and New York City, BelovED serves one of the most economically and ethnically diverse student populations in the nation.

BelovED is organized into three academies: Elementary School, Middle School, and High School, each led by an Academy Dean who focuses on developing exceptional teachers and ensuring strong instructional leadership. ABOUT THE POSITION

An Academy Dean leads each academy. While other leaders oversee academic operations, our Academy Deans are focused on instructional excellence, developing strong teachers and, through them, driving scholar achievement.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Academy and School wide Leadership

  • Lead the Middle School academy in alignment with BelovED’s mission and core values
  • Drive instructional vision, academic outcomes, and culture
  • Lead recruitment and selection of high-quality instructional staff
  • Provide ongoing coaching and feedback to teachers
  • Lead professional development aligned to instructional priorities
  • Oversee evaluation processes to ensure continuous improvement
  • Serve as a member of the K to 12 Leadership Team

Qualifications and Expectations

  • Demonstrated expertise in the analysis of assessment data, the use of data to drive instruction, and the training of teachers to lead effective Professional Learning Community meetings
  • Deep commitment to the mission and goals of the school

Professional Development Expectations

The selected candidate will be expected to read and master the following professional texts:

  • Driven by Data by Paul Bambrick Santoyo
  • Teach Like a Champion by Doug Lemov

The Academy Dean will also be expected to attend professional development workshops and training sessions as directed by the Executive Officer.

Certifications / Qualifications

It is critical that candidates possess:

  • A minimum of five years working in a similar school environment;
  • N.J. Teaching Certificate (any content area);
  • Significant experience and proven success regarding the job responsibilities outlined above; and
  • A powerful commitment to the mission and goals of Empowerment Academy Community Charter School.

In addition, the Board requires that the Dean read and master:

  • Teach Like a Champion by Doug Lemov and Driven by Data by Paul Bambrick-Santoyo
