As a member of the Human Resources Team the Benefits & Retirement Specialist is responsible for overseeing and administering the company’s multi-state benefit and retirement programs, including but not limited to; medical, dental, vision, life, AD&D, disability, wellness, and retirement plans.

Position responsibilities:

  • Administers Johnstone benefit programs by overseeing the open enrollment process, ensuring accuracy and compliance, conducting benefits orientations, and providing guidance to employees with benefits-related inquiries.
  • Partners with brokers and SVP of HR to develop and maintain the company’s strategy for benefits and renewals.
  • Ensures enrollments, life changes, and terminations are processed and communicated to carriers and payroll.
  • Audits benefit enrollments to ensure compliance with contracts, company policy, federal regulations, and compliance.
  • Serves as the main point of contact for all retirement plans.
  • Interprets retirement benefit plan policies, procedures, and legal requirements to communicate with employees.
  • Distributes all required documentation to plan participants and beneficiaries in accordance with company, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Responsible for annual compliance filings and testing, including nondiscrimination testing, ACA reporting, and 5500 filings.
  • Conducts monthly audits of payroll records to ensure accuracy of premium deductions.
  • Reconciles invoices for accurate and timely payments to vendors.
  • Advises terminated employees on what to expect regarding benefits after employment ends.
  • Supports the Senior Vice President of HR and Chief People Officer on special projects as needed.

Position requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) in Human Resources or related discipline; at least 5 years of benefit and retirement plan experience; previous mergers and acquisitions experience (M&A) and previous multi-state experience is preferred, but not required; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • A Certified Benefits Professional (CBP) preferred, but not required for this role.
  • In-depth knowledge of health, welfare, and retirement plans for a national employer.
  • General knowledge of employment laws and regulations related to benefits, including HIPAA, ERISA, and IRS
  • Ability to use and leverage the benefits modules within an HRIS, ADP, or equivalent system. Experience with ADP Workforce Now strongly preferred.
  • Ability to develop and use systems for organizing and keeping track of information.
  • Ability to create standardized procedures.
  • Problem-solving skills: listening to, interpreting, and meeting the needs of others; diagnosing and rectifying problems.
  • Ability to communicate information across different individuals, departments, and external parties.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
