Job Description - BESS Lead Field Engineer - Construction Services


Job Summary:

The BESS Lead Field Engineer (Lead FE) serves as the primary on-site technical authority for Battery Energy Storage System projects. This role bridges engineering, construction, commissioning, and OEMs to ensure BESS installations are executed in accordance with design, manufacturer requirements, and applicable codes and standards. The Lead FE provides real-time field engineering support, resolves technical issues, and leads engineering coordination throughout construction and commissioning.

Job Responsibilities:

Field Engineering Leadership

  • Act as the on-site engineering lead for all BESS-related technical matters.
  • Serve as the primary interface between Engineering, Construction, Commissioning, OEMs, and subcontractors.
  • Provide technical direction and clarification to field teams.
  • Support multiple BESS projects as assigned.

Design & Drawing Support

  • Interpret and support IFC drawings, specifications, and OEM documentation.
  • Review and respond to RFIs and field engineering questions.
  • Support redlines and as-built documentation development.
  • Identify constructability issues and recommend practical field solutions.
  • Manage customer submittals, RFI’s, materials tracking, and other FE duties as assigned.

BESS Installation Oversight

  • Support installation of battery containers, racks, PCS, MV/LV transformers, cabling, grounding, and auxiliary systems.
  • Verify installations align with OEM requirements, NEC, NFPA, and project specifications.
  • Coordinate resolution of design deviations and technical non-conformances.
  • Assist Quality and Safety teams with technical input as needed.

Testing, Commissioning & Turnover Support

  • Support pre-commissioning and commissioning activities.
  • Coordinate with OEM commissioning engineers and third-party inspectors.
  • Review commissioning procedures, test plans, and results for technical accuracy.
  • Assist with punch list resolution and system turnover.

Issue Resolution & Risk Mitigation

  • Troubleshoot field issues related to electrical systems, controls, communications, and integration.
  • Lead technical root cause analysis for field issues and system failures.
  • Support schedule recovery by proactively resolving technical constraints.
  • Escalate risks and recommendations to project leadership.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate field engineering logs and reports.
  • Support engineering change notices (ECNs) and design revisions.
  • Assist with turnover packages, including as-builts and O&M documentation.

Requirements

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering discipline (or equivalent field experience).
  • 7+ years of experience in power, renewable energy, or utility-scale electrical construction.
  • Direct experience with BESS installations, commissioning, or EPC execution.
  • Strong understanding of high-voltage and medium-voltage electrical systems.
  • Working knowledge of NEC, NFPA, IEEE, and BESS-related standards.
  • Ability to travel extensively and work in active construction environments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience leading field engineers or technical site teams.
  • Familiarity with lithium-ion battery systems, PCS, EMS, and SCADA integration.
  • Experience working directly with OEMs and utility interconnection teams.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license (or progress toward licensure).

Work Environment/Physical Requirements:

  • On project sites 
  • Ability to work extended hours during critical project phases
  • Must be able to lift more than 50 lbs
  • May require overtime, nights, or weekends based on project needs

Location: Location specific; travel 90%
