Job Description - Bilingual Medical/Ophthalmic Assistant

Description

We are looking for a temporary to potential permanent Medical/Ophthalmic Assistant for our busy Ophthalmology Office. The ideal candidate will have a friendly personality while being perceptive and disciplined. A customer oriented approach is essential as our goal is to make patients feel comfortable and valued.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Reviews patient chart to ensure completeness and accuracy of information and performs testing required by type of exam scheduled.
  • Accurately document patient complaint and history.
  • Acts as scribe while physician examines patient entering data into electronic medical records or handwrites in paper chart.
  • Ability to take an ocular and systemic history and accurately record visual acuity.
  • Perform basic muscle balance testing, visual field and assess pupils. Administer diagnostic tests.
  • Administer injections
  • Take and record vital signs
  • Administer topical ophthalmic or oral medications under the direction of the physician.
  • Assists with in-office procedures ensuring proper informed consent is obtained, sets up and cleans up from procedures.
  • Assists with patient education.
  • Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of exam rooms during the work day.
  • Complies with all practice procedures and protocols. Complies with all State and Federal regulations. Understands and accepts responsibility to report potential or suspected errors to direct supervisor.
  • Maintains positive attitude consisting of cooperation, self-motivation, courtesy, and professionalism.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, speak and hear
  • Sufficient hand dexterity to use a computer keyboard and be capable of reading a computer screen
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds

Reports to

Back Office Lead and/or Practice Administrator

Classification

Full-time position, non-exempt, temporary to potential permanent position

Requirements

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bilingual in English/Spanish
  • OA, OSC, COA desired
  • Medical Assistant certification required
  • At least 2 years of back office medical experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Ability to respond to common inquiries from customers, staff, vendors, or other members of the community.
  • Ability to draw valid conclusions, apply sound judgment in making decisions, and to make decisions under pressure.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures.
  • Must address others professionally and respectfully by actions, words and deeds.
  • Detail oriented, organized, process focused, problem solver, self motivated proactive, customer service focused.
  • Displays independent judgment by willingness to make timely and accurate decisions based on available information that is sometimes vague or limited in nature.
  • Ability to multitask effectively and work in a fast paced and sometimes ambiguous environment, without compromising quality of work.
