The Biomedical Equipment Technician is responsible for supporting the safe, reliable, and effective operation of medical equipment throughout the hospital. This position performs preventive maintenance, inspections, testing, calibration, troubleshooting, and repair of clinical equipment used in surgical services, inpatient care, imaging, sterile processing, and other patient care areas. The Biomedical Equipment Technician works closely with clinical staff, physicians, vendors, and leadership to maintain equipment in safe working condition, minimize equipment downtime, support regulatory compliance, and promote the safe delivery of patient care.
Essential Functions
Perform scheduled preventive maintenance, inspections, electrical safety testing, functional testing, calibration, and repairs on medical equipment in accordance with manufacturer recommendations, organizational policies, and applicable regulatory standards
Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair biomedical equipment
Coordinating vendor service when appropriate
Maintain accurate and timely maintenance records, repair documentation, service histories, and equipment inventories
Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements, including CMS, The Joint Commission, OSHA, NFPA, AAMI, and other applicable standards
Conduct incoming inspections and acceptance testing of new medical equipment prior to clinical use
Assist in evaluating, selecting, and implementing new medical technologies and equipment
Identify equipment malfunctions, safety concerns, and recurring problems and communicate concerns to the appropriate department leader
Monitor equipment maintenance and repair history and assist with identifying equipment that may require replacement based on age, reliability, condition, availability of parts, repair frequency, and overall cost of maintenance
Collaborate with clinical departments to prioritize equipment repairs and maintenance based on patient care needs and equipment availability
Provide education and guidance to staff regarding proper operation, care, and basic troubleshooting of medical equipment
Participate in emergency response for equipment failures affecting patient care
Assist with equipment recalls, hazard alerts, and corrective actions as issued by manufacturers or regulatory agencies
Manage vendor relationships in collaboration with the Facilities Manager
Coordinate with vendors and service providers for warranty repairs, specialized maintenance, and equipment installations
Support cybersecurity initiatives for connected medical devices in collaboration with Information Technology
Maintain an accurate inventory of medical equipment and assist with equipment labeling, tracking, and lifecycle documentation
Assist with medical equipment planning for renovation, expansion, or construction projects
Participate in on-call coverage and respond promptly to call-ins to ensure continuous patient care and surgical support as needed
Use the organization's secure messaging platform in accordance with departmental protocols, including timely receipt and responses to communications
Perform other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Quality assurance and accreditation standards
Understanding of HIPAA regulations, patient confidentiality laws and patient rights
Effective English communication in verbal and written format
Strong knowledge of biomedical equipment principles, electronics, electrical systems, and medical device technology
Working knowledge of applicable healthcare regulations and accreditation standards
Ability to troubleshoot complex medical equipment using technical manuals, diagnostic tools, and test equipment
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Ability to prioritize multiple service requests in a fast-paced healthcare environment
Quality work including attention to detail and accuracy
Advanced computer proficiency
Carry out customer service standards
Prioritize tasks effectively through managing workload based on urgency and importance
Capacity to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
Continuously learn and improve through staying up to date on job specific trends, policies and new technologies
Demonstrates eligibility for employment in the U.S.
Associate’s degree, certificate, or diploma in Biomedical Equipment Technology, Electronics Technology, or a closely related technical field preferred
Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET) certification required within three years of hire
Previous experience maintaining and repairing biomedical equipment in a hospital or healthcare setting required
Must possess a cell phone that interfaces the organization’s secure message system
