The Doula is responsible for providing person-centered, culturally competent perinatal health education, advocacy, and physical, emotional, nonmedical support for pregnant and postpartum persons before, during, and after childbirth. This includes support for live birth (vaginal or cesarean), miscarriage, and stillbirth. Doula care must support the racial, ethnic, linguistic, and cultural diversity of beneficiaries while adhering to evidence-based best practices. Doula services are aimed at preventing perinatal complications and improving health outcomes for birthing parents and infants.
Responsibilities:
- Provide basic perinatal health education throughout the pregnancy and postpartum periods.
- Provide information/ education to patients regarding the role of the doula.
- Advocate on the birthing family’s behalf if needed at clinic appointments and in the hospital.
- Interface/collaborate with hospital educators as needed for hospital tours and other programs.
- Assess learning needs and barriers of participants and adjust education or individual presentations to meet the needs of the family.
- Utilize instructional support materials approved by the Directors of Women’s Health.
- Evaluate participant outcomes using approved evaluation tools and identify the need for appropriate referral resources.
- Utilize the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system to document and bill for doula services, as appropriate.
- Assess patient’s knowledge of and encourage engagement with all components of the perinatal program, including nutritional counselling, integrated behavioral health and Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program (CPSP) visits.
- Participate in the development and delivery of new or updated health education materials.
- The doula will be responsible for being onsite at Hospital Labor & Delivery for scheduled shifts per week.
- Provide continuous, ongoing support to the birthing family while at the hospital: this includes informational support; comfort measures such as words of encouragement and reassurance, massage, guidance in breathing techniques, movement, and positioning; advocacy; presence in the operating room during a cesarean birth; and any other nonmedical support as desired by the birthing family as available.
- Collaborate with the birthing person’s family and attending medical staff to establish an atmosphere of teamwork and mutual respect.
- Maintain accurate documentation for visits including dates, time/ duration of services, information on the nature of the care and services provided and must support the length of time spent.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- Completion of basic HIPAA training, which can be conducted upon hire.
- Certification or training as a Doula with a minimum of two years’ experience as a Doula or in a related field.
- Understanding of the physiology related to pregnancy, labor and postpartum recovery.
- Knowledge of medical terminology relevant to childbirth and maternal health.
- Proficiency working in an electronic health record system and Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
Preferred Qualifications:
- DONA International Certification.
- Trauma-informed care
- Bilingual in English and Spanish (may be required at some clinics).
- Basic knowledge of behavior change educational interventions with individuals.
- Cultural sensitivity or competency, implicit bias or anti-racism or social determinants of health for birthing populations.
- Knowledge of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.
- Sensitivity toward instances of intimate partner violence.
- Knowledge of or experience in postpartum care/support.
- Knowledge of infant and newborn care.
- Perinatal loss and bereavement support.
The pay range for this role is $27.38 to $39.70 on a hourly basis.
