- MECA Therapies is seeking a compassionate and motivated Board Certified Lactation Consultant to join our growing Maternal Health Program. As New Mexico's leading provider of community-based healthcare services, MECA is committed to improving health outcomes for mothers, infants, and families.
Position Summary
The Lactation Consultant Provides prenatal education, postnatal support, and lactation classes to promote breastfeeding and maternal-infant health. Integrate clinical expertise with compassionate care to assist families in overcoming breastfeeding challenges, accessing resources, and adopting healthy infant feeding practices. Collaborates with Managed Care Organizations (MCOs) for coordinated care and community outreach, while advocating for maternal health and recovery.
Required Qualifications
- Two (2) years of experience in lactation consulting or healthcare-related experience strongly preferred.
- Proven ability to provide evidence-based lactation support, develop breastfeeding education programs, and build strong patient relationships.
- Skilled in performing in-depth lactation assessments and designing personalized breastfeeding plans.
- Strong knowledge of maternal and infant health, breastfeeding techniques, and community health resources.
- Experience collaborating within interdisciplinary teams and engaging in community partnerships.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal abilities
Essential Responsibilities
The
Board-Certified Lactation Consultant will operate within local, state, and federal regulations while adhering to all MECA policies and procedures. Essential duties include, but are not limited to:
- Ensuring compliance with the IBCLC scope of practice and nursing standards.
- Providing prenatal and postnatal lactation education to support successful breastfeeding and maternal-infant health.
- Conducting lactation assessments and developing individualized care plans for breastfeeding support.
- Identifying barriers to breastfeeding and connecting families with appropriate resources, including community lactation support and health services.
- Educating mothers and families on breastfeeding techniques, nutrition, and infant care.
- Monitoring maternal and infant health outcomes and adjusting care plans as needed.
- Documenting assessments, interventions, and care plans in electronic health records per HIPAA regulations.
- Facilitating lactation classes for individuals and groups in clinical and community settings.
- Providing support for common breastfeeding challenges, including latch issues, milk supply concerns, mastitis, and tongue/lip ties.
- Collaborating with healthcare teams and MCOs to ensure coordinated maternal health care.
- Reporting concerns of infant or maternal health risks to the appropriate agency.
- Maintaining accurate documentation in the MECA Provider Platform and other required databases.
- Conducting family satisfaction surveys to assess program effectiveness and improve services.
- Advocating maternal health and breastfeeding support within the community and healthcare system.
- Ensuring families have access to lactation services and support within designated service areas.
Caseload & Productivity Expectations
The
Lactation Consultant will provide Prenatal education, postnatal education, and lactation consulting services.
- Will provide one on one lactation consulting up to 15 clients per week.
- Will provide prenatal and postnatal education to clients as needed
- Will conduct lactation assessments and educational sessions for 100% of scheduled members.
- Will make every effort to engage 100% of assigned clients through direct consultations, group classes, and follow-ups.
Documentation & Compliance
The Lactation Consultant will accurately collect and document client data, ensuring timely and precise record-keeping by:
- Documenting all client interactions, assessments, and care plans.
- Documentation will occur at the time of service using the designated system.
Staff Development and Training
The Lactation Consultant will provide expertise, training, and guidance to staff and ensure compliance with all required training by:
- Conducting in-house lactation education and training for staff as needed.
- Attending all mandatory staff meetings and training sessions required by MCOs, supervisors, and MECA policies.
Supervision
All Lactation Consultants, including subcontractors, will provide reflective supervision to ensure quality care and adherence to professional standards.
