Description

The Building & Security Assistant II plays a vital role in supporting the safety, security, and operational readiness of the University of South Florida Libraries. This position is responsible for monitoring library facilities, conducting security and safety inspections, responding to operational concerns, assisting with emergency response activities, and coordinating building support services.

Working collaboratively with library personnel, University Police, Facilities Management, and other campus partners, the Building & Security Assistant II helps ensure that library facilities remain secure, functional, and welcoming for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The position requires sound judgment, strong customer service skills, attention to detail, and the ability to respond effectively to building-related and security-related situations.

Work Schedule:

  • Sunday - Thursday 5:00 PM-2:00 AM. Schedule may change based upon operational needs. 
  • 40 Hours per Week


Responsibilities


Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine inspections of library facilities, grounds, and public spaces to identify safety, security, maintenance, or operational concerns. 
  • Monitor library facilities during shifts, and/or special-event operations. 
  • Assist with building access control and occasional after-hours operational support.
  • De-escalate disruptive behavior and respond to security concerns, building emergencies, and facility-related incidents, following established university policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate with University Police, Facilities Management, Environmental Health & Safety, and other campus departments as needed. 
  • Complete incident reports and maintain accurate documentation of building operations, security activities, maintenance concerns, and facility inspections. 
  • Assist with event logistics, including room setup, furniture movement, audiovisual support, and security coordination. 
  • Monitor and track preventive maintenance activities and vendor service requests. 
  • Assist in emergency preparedness activities including storm preparations, building evacuations, continuity of operations efforts and post-storm recovery.
  • Provide guidance and support to student employees and other staff members regarding facility procedures and operational expectations. 
  • Maintain professional and courteous interactions with library patrons while providing excellent customer service.
  • Assist with package deliveries, inventory management, mailroom support, and supply coordination.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of library operations, facilities management, and campus safety.


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in building operations, facilities support, or security services.
  • Equivalent vocational/technical training or college coursework may substitute for experience.
  • Must meet all employment eligibility requirements under U.S. law and Florida Senate Bill 1310.
  • Senate Bill 1310- The Florida Senate (https://www.flsenate.gov/Session/Bill/2023/1310) is conditional upon meeting all employment eligibility requirements in the U.S.
  • SB 1310: Substitution of Work Experience for Postsecondary Education Requirements
  • A public employer may include a postsecondary degree as a baseline requirement only as an alternative to the number of years of direct experience required, not to exceed:
    • (a) Two years of direct experience for an associate degree;
    • (b) Four years of direct experience for a bachelor’s degree;
    • (c) Six years of direct experience for a master’s degree;
    • (d) Seven years of direct experience for a professional degree; or
    • (e) Nine years of direct experience for a doctoral degree
  • Related work experience may not substitute for any required licensure, certification, or registration required for the position of employment as established by the public employer and indicated in the advertised description of the position of employment.
  • Minimum Qualifications that require a high school diploma are exempt from SB 1310.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong situational awareness, attention to detail and problem-solving skills. 

  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and adjust to changing operational needs in a face-paced environment. 

  • Knowledge of basic building systems, safety practices, and maintenance procedures. 

  • Ability to respond calmly and effectively during emergencies or stressful situations. 

  • Strong customer service and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Ability to interact professionally with students, faculty, staff, and visitors from diverse backgrounds 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and related workplace tools and technology. 

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise professional judgment.

  • Basic computer proficiency and ability to learn university systems
