Functions:
The Building Inspector performs on-site inspections of residential and commercial construction projects to verify compliance with adopted building codes, approved plans, and City ordinances. Working under the direction of the Building Official, this position focuses on field inspections, documentation, and customer communication to support safe, compliant development within the City of Horseshoe Bay.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct on-site inspections at various stages of construction to ensure compliance with adopted building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and related codes.
- Perform inspections primarily for residential construction, with commercial and specialty inspections as assigned.
- Verify construction work matches approved plans and permitted scope.
- Identify code deficiencies and clearly communicate required corrections to contractors and property owners.
- Document inspection results, corrections, and approvals in the City’s permitting and inspection system.
- Perform required license verification of regulated trades as directed.
- Assist the Building Official with field inspections, re-inspections, and special projects as needed.
- Respond to routine inspection-related inquiries from contractors, developers, and the public in a professional and customer-service-oriented manner.
- Monitor job sites for unsafe conditions and immediately report hazards or violations to the Building Official.
- Coordinate inspection activities with Permit Technician, Plans Examiner, and other departments as necessary.
- Maintain current knowledge of applicable codes and inspection practices through continuing education and training.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Marginal Functions
- Assist with special inspections, site visits, or inspections related to complaints or investigations as directed.
- Participate in training or internal process improvement initiatives within Development Services.
Minimum Training, Education and Experience Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid State of Texas Class C driver’s license.
- Minimum two (2) years of experience in building inspection, construction, or a closely related field.
- Building Inspector certification issued by the International Code Council (ICC) or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe.
- Ability to obtain the State Plumbing Inspectors License within 6 months of hire.
Preferred Training, Education and Experience:
- Additional ICC certifications (Residential, Commercial, Mechanical, Electrical, Energy, Swimming Pool & Spa, Fuel Gas, Fire, Mechanical, and/or Plumbing).
- Experience working in a municipal or regulatory environment.
- Familiarity with permitting and inspection software systems.
- Texas State Board of Plumbing Inspectors License.
