Job Description - Buildings & Grounds Technician

About Aidan Montessori School

Founded in 1961, Aidan Montessori School serves a diverse community of 190 children, ages 18 months through grade 6. Our mission is to help children realize their full potential and become independent, self-motivated, and socially responsible citizens of the world. We do this by following the principles of Montessori education and cultivating a community centered on curiosity, respect, humanity, and peace.

As Washington, D.C.’s oldest Montessori school and one of the oldest in the nation, Aidan is both a home for families seeking a child-centered education and a leader in the broader Montessori movement.

We embrace diversity and strive to maintain an inclusive, equitable environment where every individual feels a genuine sense of belonging.

Position Summary

The Buildings & Grounds Coordinator is responsible for the daily care, cleanliness, maintenance, and safety of our 17,000-square-foot school building and surrounding grounds. This is a hands-on, active role that plays a critical part in keeping the school running smoothly.

The Coordinator performs routine cleaning and maintenance, completes repairs, supports school logistics, and responds to day-to-day needs as they arise. This role is ideal for someone who takes pride in visible results, enjoys practical problem-solving, and understands that consistency, follow-through, and physical work are essential to a well-functioning school environment.

Key Responsibilities

Daily Operations & Campus Care

  • Conduct daily walkthroughs of the building, playground, and perimeter to identify and address maintenance, cleanliness, or safety needs.

  • Clean and maintain shared spaces throughout the day, including mopping, addressing spills or messes, and ensuring bathrooms and common areas are tidy and functional.

  • Perform outdoor upkeep such as leaf blowing, clearing walkways, and maintaining play areas.

  • Assist with morning arrival and traffic safety support.

Cleaning, Supplies & Preventive Maintenance

  • Restock and maintain bathroom, classroom, and shared-space supplies.

  • Monitor and service equipment such as dishwashers and laundry machines (filters, rinse aid, lint traps, general condition).

  • Maintain inventories and complete required logs and checklists on a recurring schedule.

  • Clean outdoor drains and support seasonal maintenance needs, including light snow removal.

Repairs & Hands-On Maintenance

  • Complete routine repairs and upkeep, including basic plumbing, light electrical work, painting, hardware installation, furniture assembly, and minor carpentry.

  • Identify small issues before they become larger problems and either address them directly or escalate as appropriate.

  • Support pest control, fire safety, HVAC, and other inspections by completing prep work and follow-up tasks.

Logistics, Events & School Support

  • Assist with classroom and office setup, furniture moves, storage organization, and event setup/cleanup.

  • Support staff with occasional special projects that arise during the school day.

  • Be available on-site during vendor or contractor visits to ensure work is coordinated smoothly and minimally disruptive.

Communication & Documentation

  • Respond to work orders, email, and Slack messages to confirm receipt and completion of tasks.

  • Maintain accurate logs for inspections, safety checks, and required compliance records.

  • Collaborate closely with school leadership and staff to prioritize and complete tasks efficiently.

Qualifications

  • Experience in facilities maintenance, custodial work, or building operations.

  • Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and carpentry tasks.

  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and attention to detail.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks independently and follow through to completion.

  • Valid driver’s license.

  • Team-oriented mindset with a strong focus on safety and care.

Preferred

  • Experience working in a school or community-based setting.

  • Comfort using email, checklists, and basic digital recordkeeping tools.

  • Familiarity with preventive maintenance and inspection logs.

Compensation and Benefits

Aidan offers a highly competitive compensation and benefits package, including:

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance

  • Paid time off and holidays

  • Retirement plan participation

  • A supportive, mission-driven community environment
