OVERVIEW

The Bulk Department Head plays a key role in the success of the Grocery Department by leading the bulk foods section at the Community Food Co-op. This position combines hands-on grocery work with department leadership responsibilities, including product selection, merchandising, inventory management, and team communication. The ideal candidate will have a passion for excellent customer service, strong organizational skills, and a collaborative, team-oriented mindset.

Reports to: Grocery Manager

Starting Pay: $21.99 per hour (Range: $22.99 – $26.12)

Status: Full-time, Union Position

POSITION SUMMARY

The Bulk Department Head performs all duties of a Grocery Team Member while also overseeing the operations and success of the bulk department. This includes maintaining clean, well-stocked displays, selecting and ordering products, and supporting the team with clear communication and leadership. You'll ensure the bulk department meets sales, margin, and customer service goals that contribute to the overall financial health of the store.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide excellent, professional customer service to shoppers and coworkers.
• Perform regular Grocery shifts and all standard Grocery Team Member functions.
• Meet regularly with the Grocery Category Manager to review product selection, merchandising strategies, promotions, and pricing.
• Stay current on new products and industry trends; review sales reports monthly.
• Ensure all bulk bins and displays are clean, functional, and properly labeled and priced.
• Support the Grocery team in creating attractive and organized displays with appropriate signage.
• Maintain an effective ordering system to ensure appropriate stock levels and product quality.
• Follow all food safety, sanitation, and health department standards to ensure a clean and safe shopping environment.
• Coordinate with the Pricing Department regarding new items, vendor updates, promotions, and pricing needs.
• Communicate bulk department standards, expectations, and updates to the Grocery team and assign relevant tasks to Grocery Team Members.
• Attend department and all-staff meetings.
• Demonstrate a strong understanding of co-op principles and values; clearly explain membership benefits.
• Follow all Co-op policies and procedures and keep your supervisor informed of any concerns or ideas.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

• Previous experience working in a grocery store or similar retail environment preferred.
• Strong commitment to providing excellent customer service.
• Ability to work a variety of shifts, including evenings and weekends.
• Willingness to learn, grow, and take on new responsibilities.
• Strong communication, organizational, and multitasking skills.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
• Proficiency with basic computer programs, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and email.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Washington State Food Handler Card.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to work in a fast-paced, busy grocery store environment while maintaining a calm and professional demeanor.
• Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with customers, coworkers, and vendors.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, twist, reach, and perform repetitive motions for extended periods of time.
• Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull items weighing up to 60 lbs regularly.
• Ability to safely operate equipment such as pallet jacks, forklifts, ladders, and balers (training provided as needed).
• Comfortable working in environments with moderate to loud noise, including music, paging systems, customer conversations, and equipment operation.
• Occasional use of ladders and step stools to stock or retrieve product.
