Description

  • The Bus Dispatcher is responsible for ensuring that all   scheduled bus services are met by assigning drivers to routes, ensuring   timely dispatch, and managing service departures and arrivals. The Dispatcher   works in the bus dispatch office, coordinating the deployment of bus   operators to their routes and ensuring the fleet is prepared to meet demand.   Dispatchers typically work split shifts to accommodate peak service hours,   including the morning rush and late afternoon pull-in periods. 

Requirements

 Please note:

  • This position requires flexibility. You will work a rotational schedule throughout the year, which will include 24/7 hours.
  • You must be able to complete a DOT Physical and receive at least a one (1) year MEC.
  • If you do not currently have a CDL with Passenger endorsement, you will be required to do so within one year.
  • In-person interviews will tentative be scheduled April 21-24.

Responsibilities: The following duties are standard for   this position. The omission of   specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the classification   if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this   classification.Driver Assignment and Dispatch 

  • Assign bus operators to routes   according to the daily schedule and ensure all operators are on-time for   their assigned shifts.
  • Dispatch buses promptly to meet   scheduled service requirements, ensuring buses depart on time.
  • Communicate with operators   regarding their assignments, ensuring clarity and readiness to depart.

Scheduling and Staffing Management and   Monitoring

  • Ensure that all bus routes are   staffed according to the service plan, making adjustments as necessary to   cover last-minute absences or delays.
  • Track and manage driver pull-outs   (morning) and pull-ins (afternoon/evening) to ensure proper coverage during   peak service hours.
  • Coordinate replacement or relief   drivers when needed to maintain consistent service.

Communication and Coordination

  • Serve as the primary point of   contact for bus operators before and during their routes.
  • Provide operators with any   last-minute updates or route changes, including detours or road conditions   affecting service.
  • Assist with operator inquiries or   requests for support, relaying information to supervisors as needed.

Manage Absences and Schedule Changes

  • Monitor attendance, track   operator absences, and coordinate shift changes or replacements.
  • Ensure sufficient coverage is   maintained at all times, particularly during peak hours.
  • Communicate with the operations   team to resolve schedule gaps or challenges.

Coordination with Maintenance and   Operations to address schedule disruptions

  • Communicate with the maintenance   department regarding vehicle availability, ensuring buses are ready for   dispatch.
  • Work closely with the operations   team to ensure that all routes are fully covered and service disruptions are   minimized.
  • Notify operators of any vehicle   changes or mechanical issues that may affect their assignment.

Record Keeping and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate logs of   operator assignments, absences, and shift changes.
  • Track any schedule deviations and   report them to supervisors for review.
  • Generate daily dispatch reports,   including operator attendance and on-time performance.

Core   Competencies: Attention to Detail: Ensure that all operator assignments and   dispatching are accurate and on schedule.

  • Communication: Ability to clearly and effectively communicate with   operators and other staff.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable working in a dynamic environment, especially   during peak service hours.
  • Problem-Solving: Skilled in making quick adjustments to assignments or   dispatch plans to address operator availability or service challenges.

  

Education:

· High school diploma or equivalent required.

· Additional coursework in transportation, logistics, or communications is a plus.

Experience:

· 2+ years of experience in transportation, logistics, dispatch, or a related field.

· Prior experience in public transit operations is preferred.
