SUMMARY
Responsible for overseeing the routine care and feeding of 400 dairy x beef bottle calves and 400 grower calves kept in a feedlot environment.  Their primary concern is ensuring that proper husbandry techniques and feeding programs are in place to promote optimal growth for each animal in the herd.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This job generally requires the ability to perform the following duties:
  • Calf Care: Bottle feeding twice daily up to 400 bottle calves, feeding and care of up to 400 weaned grower calves.  Duties include all aspects of calf care, including feeding, health monitoring, vaccinations, proper bedding and pen management, and overall well-being.
  • Nutrition management: Monitoring feed quality and report to management team for changes working closely with hired nutritionist.
  • Health Monitoring: Conduct regular/daily health checks, identify, and address any signs of illness promptly.  Work closely with designated veterinarians and management to maintain herd health.
  • Facility Management: Ensure cleanliness and hygiene of the bottle calf area as well as the grower pens.  Perform proper and designated sanitation protocols.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records pertaining to treatments, vaccinations, and feed records.  Using designated computer systems to do so.
  • Supervise and train any employees of the farm. Promote a positive and collaborative work environment.
  • Identify and suggest room for improvement and efficiency.
  • Order feed and forage on a timely basis.
  • Repair fencing and equipment. 
  • Treat minor cattle injuries
  • Monitor behavior of each member of the herd
  •  Responsible for ensuring that sanitary conditions are met and maintained, guaranteeing animal welfare in accordance with all applicable laws and governmental regulations.
  • Additional duties include sorting and loading cattle to meet sale requirements, handling sales calls from livestock feed sales representatives, conducting shipping arrangements, and keeping detailed records of cattle and expenses.
  • Ensure that the farm working environment is safe, by utilizing safety equipment, training, and taking necessary actions to prevent hazardous conditions.
  • Assist with scheduling and prioritizing workload with daily and weekly summaries.
  • Monitor and maintain appropriate ventilation and barn environments.
  • Responsible to follow and enforce all biosecurity policies and procedures.
  • Assist with management of financial performance by working towards established goals, controlling costs, and adhering to previously set protocols.
