We advocate for equitable policies that protect all consumers, while centering the needs of lower income and BIpoc communities, through policy change, research, and grassroots organizing.

Job Summary:
TURN is seeking a Central Valley Community Organizer who will support our grassroots organizing efforts in Fresno, Merced and San Joaquin Counties.  The Organizer will identify, train and support leaders, build and sustain regional organizing tables and  engage in power building activities to advance energy, phone and broadband justice.  
Our ideal candidate has 6+ years of experience organizing within base building organizations working with BIpoc communities with specific expertise in identifying and developing leaders to grow the base and advance strategic campaigns. 

Position Summary 
Working under the direction of the Organizing Director, the Central Valley Community Organizer is responsible for the identifying, training community leaders and advocates, facilitating leadership development and education, co-leading issue identification, power analysis, and campaign strategy development, and will support community leaders with campaign implementation, community outreach and engagement.

Duties/Responsibilities:
Organizing and Advocacy 
  • Organize to build power to advance an energy and communications justice movement that recognizes the interdependence of people, policies, and basic needs of energy and communications for all Californians. 
  • Strengthen and expand TURN’s working relationships with community-based organizations, public sector partners, and decision makers throughout the state. 
  • Develop and present training on energy and communications justice, popular education, know your rights and legislative process to community members, partner organizations, and allies.  
  • Maintain a working knowledge of how public policy is created and shaped at the legislative and regulatory level of the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). 
Communications, Marketing, and Public Relations 
  • Maintains a consistent presence in the targeted communities, developing and maintaining relationships with grassroots leaders, community groups and decision-makers. 
  •  Identify noteworthy stories from the field and assist with story development. 
  • Regularly provide reports to the Organizing Director on leader development, network expansion and issue opportunities for campaigns. 
  • Provide and post content of organizing activities to social media such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as well as prepare articles for newsletters and action alerts. 
  • Create outreach and training materials for use in organizing activities and campaigns.  
Direct Service 
  • Provide regular support, guidance and education to customers  through TURN’s consumer hotline. 
Information Management 
  • Utilize  Salesforce,  Microsoft 365, Asana and/or other data and project management tools to work collaboratively with team members.
  • Maintain organized documentation of agendas, fliers, event notes, training materials and other collaterals.

  • Self-motivated independent worker 
  • Digital organizing skills a plus
  • Bilingual Spanish-English verbal skills a plus 
Reporting and Supervision: 
Reports to the Organizing Director
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • At least 6 years of experience in grassroots organizing 
Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk working on a computer, standing and driving to various locations for events.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
  • This is a full-time exempt position that may require occasional after-business hours work to meet deadlines or to attend work-related functions.
  • Flexibility to work occasionally on evenings and weekends, valid driver’s license for travel to organizing events, and occasional travel within California and nationally.
