Job Description - Caregiver


 

Position Summary: 

The Caregiver aids with assistance for older adults needing help with daily tasks from physical or cognitive limitations. Duties may vary depending on the needs of the client being served.  

Key Responsibilities: 

  1. Assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): Bathing, grooming, toileting, dressing, eating. 
  2. Personal Care Assistance: Helping with hygiene, skin care, brushing teeth, other personal care needs. 
  3. Assistance with mobility: Transferring from bed to wheelchair or walker, provide stand-by assistance when client is ambulating, always ensuring safety at home or during community-based outings. 
  4. Medication Reminders: Encourage the client to take medications on time as prescribed. 
  5. Meal Preparation: Planning and preparing nutritious meals and promoting hydration. 
  6. Light Housekeeping: Tasks may include dishes, laundry, taking out trash / recycling, watering plants, always maintaining a clean and safe environment. 
  7. Companionship: Providing conversation and offering activities for ongoing engagement and overall health support. 
  8. Documentation: Complete required notes for each shift, reporting any changes in condition, frequency of toileting, amount of meals consumed, any other information to share with the client’s care team. 

Requirements

 

Qualifications: 

  • Minimum of one year’s experience with aging adults preferred. 
  • Proven history of reliability and good attendance to scheduled shifts required. 
  • Cultural sensitivity: Ability to work with clients from diverse backgrounds and ability to respect different customs. 
  • Able to physically support clients with mobility, repositioning, and overall safety. 
  • Compassion for the client needing assistance. 
  • Ability to communicate with the client, client’s family, healthcare professionals, and other members of the care team. 
  • Problem Solving Skills: Caregivers should be able to handle unexpected situations including medical emergencies and challenging behaviors.  
  • End of life care experience strongly preferred.  
  • Valid driver’s license and proof of insurance are required for all caregivers who will  provide transportation services.
