About the Role

The Carpenter is a skilled journeyman-level trades position within the Central Maintenance Services / Physical Plant Department responsible for performing advanced carpentry, construction, renovation, and building maintenance activities throughout AIDB facilities.

This position performs a wide variety of rough and finish carpentry duties requiring extensive knowledge of commercial construction practices, building systems, materials, tools, and maintenance procedures. The Carpenter is responsible for planning, organizing, and completing construction and maintenance projects while ensuring work is performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established standards, specifications, blueprints, and architectural drawings.

The Carpenter provides leadership and direction to assigned employees, helpers, and temporary workers while coordinating construction activities, monitoring project progress, and ensuring quality workmanship. This position requires the ability to independently troubleshoot building issues, determine appropriate solutions, manage assigned projects, and communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, contractors, and campus personnel.

The Carpenter plays a critical role in maintaining AIDB’s educational, residential, administrative, and support facilities by ensuring buildings remain safe, functional, accessible, and professionally maintained. Through skilled craftsmanship and project leadership, this position directly supports AIDB’s mission of providing exceptional services and opportunities to individuals who are Deaf, Blind, DeafBlind, and multidisabled.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Basic Qualifications

• Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required. 
• Driver's License & Fleet Coverage: Valid Driver License required; must meet AIDB vehicle insurance eligibility requirements. Driving accommodations may be made for applicants with an exceptionality.
• Required Experience: Minimum of eight (8) years of successful carpentry experience required. 
• Must meet suitability requirements for employment

Preferred Qualifications

• Maintenance Experience: Four (4) years of experience in commercial building maintenance preferred. 
• Trades & Technical Background: Five (5) years of related full-time work experience and/or equivalent technical training preferred, including vocational/technical training in construction, carpentry, or building maintenance. 
• Project & Equipment Proficiency: Experience working with commercial tools, equipment, building materials, and assisting with renovations, repairs, and facility improvement projects. 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Carpentry & Construction

• Skilled Trade Execution: Perform skilled rough and finish carpentry work involving construction, renovation, repair, and maintenance of AIDB facilities. 
• Technical Mastery: Extensive knowledge of rough and finish carpentry, construction methods, building systems, blueprint reading, project planning, and maintenance procedures.

• Blueprints & Calculations: Interpret and work from architectural drawings, blueprints, sketches, specifications, and project plans; perform accurate measurements, layouts, calculations, and material estimates. 
• Structural Layout: Layout buildings, structures, foundations, walls, and other construction elements. 
• Component Installation: Construct, install, repair, and modify building components including walls, doors, frames, cabinets, shelving, countertops, trim, flooring, fixtures, and architectural finishes. 
• Demonstrated Technical Ability: Ability to operate woodworking equipment safely, perform accurate measurements and layouts, manage construction and maintenance projects, supervise workers, troubleshoot complex building issues, and complete assignments independently. 
• Framing & Millwork: Frame structures and complete finishing work according to specifications; construct and install cabinets, shelving, millwork, and custom carpentry projects. 
• Drywall & Surfaces: Install, repair, and finish drywall (including patching, sanding, and surface finishing), flooring materials, trim, Formica, countertops, and molding. 

Building Maintenance & Repair

• Facility Maintenance: Perform comprehensive building maintenance and repair activities across interior and exterior building structures. 
• Hardware & Roofing: Repair and maintain doors, locks, hinges, hardware, roofs (including preventative maintenance), gutters, and related building components. 
• Concrete & Repairs: Complete concrete work including forming, pouring, finishing, and structural repairs. 
• Preventative Maintenance: Identify building concerns, recommend repair solutions, and perform preventative maintenance to keep assigned facilities in a safe, functional, and professional condition. 

Project Management & Supervision

• Project Coordination: Plan, coordinate, and manage assigned construction and maintenance projects, organizing tools, materials, equipment, and resources. 
• Staff Leadership: Provide direction, instruction, and support to Carpenter Helpers, General Maintenance Workers, and other assigned personnel. 
• Quality Assurance: Monitor work progress, ensure project completion according to specifications and department standards, and communicate updates/timelines to supervisors. 
• Inter-Departmental Collaboration: Coordinate with other Physical Plant trades and external contractors as needed. 
• Instructions & Safety: Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions, safely operate basic hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment, and work effectively with skilled trades personnel and department leadership. 

Equipment Operation & Safety

• Equipment Care: Safely operate, clean, inspect, and service woodworking equipment, power tools, hand tools, and construction equipment. 
• Safety & Compliance: Follow all OSHA requirements, AIDB safety procedures, and departmental guidelines; ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). 
• Workplace Oversight: Maintain a clean and organized work environment, reporting unsafe conditions or equipment issues promptly. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

The Carpenter position requires the ability to perform physically demanding skilled trade work, including:

• Standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, and reaching for extended periods. 
• Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling construction materials, tools, and equipment. 
• Working indoors and outdoors in varying environmental conditions. 
• Operating power tools, woodworking equipment, vehicles, and construction equipment. 
• Working from ladders, lifts, rooftops, and elevated surfaces.  
• Performing tasks requiring strength, coordination, precision, and attention to safety.

Professional Development and Certifications

• Sign Language Proficiency: A minimum SURVIVAL level of sign language proficiency according to the AIDB evaluation system must be obtained within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment.
