Job Description - Case Manager - Brooklyn Criminal Court

Summary:


The Criminal Court Case Manager, based in the courthouse walk-in reception center, provides comprehensive, client-centered assistance to individuals and families impacted by violence and abuse. Core services provided by the Case Manager include safety assessment and risk management, orientation to court process, information about victims’ rights and role, crisis intervention and supportive counseling, criminal justice and personal advocacy, and referrals.


Essential Job Functions:


The Case Manager will work with clients who access the Criminal Court reception center and address their immediate needs. The Case Manager’s responsibilities include:



  • Learn and integrate a trauma-informed, client-centered approach, using an anti-oppressive lens, into your work with clients.

  • Provides orientation to law enforcement and court process and victims’ rights and options, and supports clients to make informed decisions;

  • Liaises with the Criminal Court Bureau and Special Victims Unit, County DA’s Office and assists victims scheduled for interviews with County DA’s Office staff;

  • Conducts client-centered safety assessment and risk management planning;

  • Provides short-term crisis intervention and supportive counseling in person and by telephone;

  • Assists victims to obtain orders of protection;

  • Provides updates and assists clients in reporting any continued harassment and other violations;

  • Assists victims to obtain Office of Victims Services compensation, restitution, and relocation assistance;

  • Advocates with District Attorney’s Office, police, housing, employers, schools, child protective, and other social service agencies; Provides information about and referrals to governmental and non-governmental organizations including shelters, domestic violence and sexual assault organizations, mental health treatment, public assistance, and legal services;

  • Provides emergency practical assistance for clients including transportation, financial assistance, and lock replaces;

  • Enters data into a computerized record keeping system and maintains thorough and accurate case records and statistics;

  • Maintains routine administrative responsibilities include preparation of correspondence, maintenance of files, mail, e-mail and telephones;

  • Works collaboratively with partners including County District Attorney’s Office, Court staff, New York Police Department, NYC Mayor’s Office to End Domestic and Gender-Based Violence, and community based organizations;

  • Works collaboratively with other Safe Horizon programs;

  • Participates in staff meetings, supervision, and relevant trainings and seminars;


Knowledge and Skills:


Required skills:



  • Compassion towards victims/survivors;

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (be assertive, collaborative, and well-organized);

  • Ability to work under pressure in a calm and reassuring manner;

  • Competency using computers, Microsoft Outlook, and systems for managing case records;

  • Strong work ethic and positive attitude


 


Desirable:



  • Understanding of victimization and trauma;

  • Fluency in Spanish or another second language spoken by client population is strongly preferred;


Education:

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience


Experience:


Required:


Training, employment, internship, and/or volunteer experience in criminal justice, social work, or related field


Desirable:



  • At least one year of experience working in a social services, domestic violence, criminal justice, or comparable agency

  • Experience working with people in crisis

  • Experience working with diverse client population

  • Familiarity with legal and social service systems in NYC
