Job Description - Cemetery Superintendent

Description

This in-person position is located in Wilmington, Delaware. Catholic Cemeteries of the Diocese of Wilmington is seeking a Superintendent who will manage the day-to-day operations of two Catholic regional cemeteries. The Superintendent supervises and participates in the cemetery’s office, sales, service, interment, and maintenance operations to maximize efficiency, while recognizing and enhancing the spiritual and pastoral nature of the Catholic Cemetery ministry.

The schedule for this full-time position is Monday through Friday, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm and may require occasional availability outside of normal business hours, as needed, to support calls on an emergency basis.

Essential Functions:

  • Supervises and coordinates all activity related to the daily operations of the cemetery office.
  • Directs, coordinates and monitors all cemetery field operations including interments, entombments, memorialization, general maintenance, renovations, and development.
  • Develops, coordinates and participates in the sales and service programs of the cemetery. This includes recommendations for pricing and inventory development.
  • Develops standards of performance for office, sales, and field operations.
  • Monitors appearance and periodically inspects the components of the cemetery’s infrastructure and reports specific maintenance and structural issues as required along with appropriate recommendations for remediation.
  • Monitors, develops and evaluates personnel.
  • Develops and maintains professional relationships with the public, funeral directors, monument dealers and other professional associates.
  • Investigates new methods, procedures and equipment to improve the overall efficiency and economy of cemetery operations and makes appropriate recommendations to the Executive Director.
  • Receives requests for equipment, supplies, and fixtures, determines the validity of the request, and forwards requests to the Executive Director.
  • Negotiates new, and reviews existing cemetery contracts and makes recommendations to the Executive Director.
  • Monitors income and expenses to ensure the financial integrity of cemetery operations.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or related field, and 3 years of experience in cemetery operations; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • An understanding of and appreciation for the rules and traditions of the Catholic Church especially those related to Christian Burial.
  • An understanding of general cemetery rules and regulations and a familiarity with cemetery office and field operations.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective interpersonal and public relations ability.
  • Strong computer skills including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office/365, email applications, and the ability to learn and use database and financial software.
  • Ability to make decisions, arrange priorities, and achieve goals.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality while working with confidential/sensitive materials, information and data.
  • Ability to travel throughout the footprint of the Diocese.
  • Ability to build trust and rapport with individuals from diverse cultural, socio-economic, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Willingness to consent to a satisfactory criminal background check and drug screening in accordance with applicable laws.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington.
