Job Summary:

The responsibility of this position is to provide professional, quality health care to patients, and support a team of providers to include Medical Doctors and Nurse Practitioners while functioning as an important member of a team in the nursing department within the scope of practice for a Certified Medical Assistant or Licensed Practical Nurse.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Deliver clinical care under the direction of the Director of Nursing and internal prescriber team  

  • Meet with clients as scheduled.
  • Take vital signs/weights, gathering medical histories and observations, collecting lab specimens (e.g. urine drug screens, oral swabs, glucose testing, etc.), provide patient education materials (e.g. on medications, mental health, physical health conditions), coordination of services (e.g. assist with scheduling appointments/referrals, contact other providers to coordinate care), and administer medications as directed/ordered by internal prescribers (long-acting injectable medications).
  • Understand, recognize, and report any client concerns, and changes with symptoms or medications at each visit and during phone calls. 

Perform administrative task

  • Process medication refills/prior authorizations as approved by prescriber.
  • Review/monitor daily schedules and ensure links are available, and any needed records are received prior to the visit time. 
  • Respond and address messages promptly within scope of licensure.
  • Review caseload reports and assist clients with scheduling follow-up visits. Follow up with client no-show appointments and communicate concerns to multidisciplinary team members.
  • Enter accurate, objective, and pertinent information and/or updates into the electronic health record.
  • Support the psychiatry nursing team with administrative tasks/cross-train and delegate as needed.

Assists in client crises and emergencies at HRC in cooperation with other staff members. 

  • Assists professional and non-professional HRC staff when dealing with crises and emergency situations on site, by speaking with clients or making phone calls, consulting with others, calling for emergency responders, etc.
  • Participates in pre-petition screenings or team meetings when asked or deemed necessary.
  • Document necessary medical information for use by emergency response teams.
  • Collaborate in multidisciplinary team meetings and consultations.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Ability to work as a team member and independently; self-starter
  • Good time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively and with empathy
  • Active listening skills, negotiation, de-escalation, and crisis intervention skills.
  • Health insurance/billing experience a plus
  • Adheres to professional standards, Federal, State and local requirements, and Spero policies and procedures
  • Critical thinking skills to identify, analyze, and implement evidenced-based best practice interventions
  • Complies with Safety and Infection Control policies to ensure a safe work environment within OSHA standards and best practices
  • Maintain client confidentiality following Federal HIPPA and State standards
  • Must be flexible and willing to cross train/backup nursing intake (within the CMA scope of practice) in the psychiatry nursing department
  • Computer skills: Electronic health record and basic Microsoft experience
  • Positive and helpful attitude

Education and Experience:

  • BLS/First Aid/CPR Certification and
  • Completed a Medical Assistant educational program from an accredited institution
  • Must have passed the Medical Assistant Certification exam (Must keep certification current)

OR Current/unencumbered LPN-Licensed Practical Nurse License

Physical Requirements: 

  • Have the ability to move quickly to respond to crisis situations.
  • Have the ability to communicate well with peers, staff, residents, family members, and providers.
  • Visual ability to review detailed reports and ability to write clearly and succinctly.
  • Have the ability and training to use a blood pressure cuff, other vital signs monitoring equipment, in addition to an AED and medication administration equipment such as needles and syringes.
  • Have the ability to work in an environment which requires the use of a computer, telephone, copier, fax, etc. 

Work Environment:

The employee must be able to tolerate and adapt to a daily schedule that is subject to change due to emergent and urgent clients’ needs as well as rescheduling, canceling, and clients that do not show for appointments. Duties are performed in an office setting, meeting face to face or via video with clients.
