Job Description - Certified Nurse Midwife


The Certified Nurse Midwife will assist in the provision of comprehensive perinatal care services; assist in the provision of other OB/GYN services with the support of a Board Certified and/or eligible OB/GYN physician and/or Family Practitioner. 

The Certified Nurse Midwife is expected to coordinate with OB/GYN consultants for specific supervision and required support; family practitioners and pediatrician for general back-up in prenatal care and family planning coverage; and other Bond CHC staff and external partners for planning, counseling, referral follow-up, health plan development, marketing and outreach.


Requirements

 

At the request of the Chief Medical Officer, the Certified Nurse Midwife is expected to fulfill the following duties:

  • Provide direct patient care services for the prenatal care lifecycle consistent with Bond CHC's policies and protocols, BPHC, HEDIS and ACOG guidelines.
  • Secure and record a complete health history including obstetrical, gynecologic, contraceptive, medical, surgical, family health and psychosocial.
  • Perform appropriate screening physical examination with special emphasis on the reproductive system, including breast and complete pelvic examination, obtaining materials for STI investigation and control, cytological and vaginal smears and other type of specialized screening procedures.
  • Collaborate with the Bond CHC team, including the Ryan White team, other FQHCs, community agencies and resources through joint planning and coordination of activities in providing comprehensive prenatal care.
  • Provide patient education and techniques focused on family planning, sexual counseling and principles of health promotion and maintenance.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, clinical measures and quality assurance, and interdisciplinary committees which affect or determine policies related to the efficient delivery of quality health care to the consumer.

Gynecology

  • Provide  primary health care to non-pregnant, asymptomatic women for health maintenance, including family planning services.
  • Recognize deviations from normal and refer to appropriate medical/social resources.
  • Request and/or perform specific diagnostic procedures with appropriate consultation with the physician.
  • Recognize gynecologic disorders and provide treatment within prescribed protocols.
  • Manage therapy for specific gynecologic disorders in collaboration with the physician.
  • Support and instruct the patient with respect to problems specific to female health, including counseling related to sexuality, family dynamics, infertility, family planning, self-breast examination and menopause.
  • Correlate history, physical and laboratory data to select and carry out a contraceptive program tailored to the patient’s needs.

Obstetrics 

Antepartum Care

  • Establish with the physician the status of the present pregnancy and identify risks, present or potential.
  • Assume responsibility for the management of the care of mother, and fetus throughout pregnancy, as long as progress meets criteria accepted as normal.
  • Request or perform diagnostic procedures with appropriate consultation with the Physician.
  • Provide health education regarding the development of pregnancy, including physiologic changes in mother and fetus, preparation for labor and delivery and anticipatory guidance in relation to family adjustments to the newborn.

Post-Partum Care

  • Provide post-partum counseling for the mother regarding comfort measures, personal hygiene, physical exercises, emotional changes, and sexual functioning.
  • Perform post-partum physical examination and provide method of contraception where indicated.
  • Support the woman and her family in the development of normal parenting patterns.
  • Assist and advise the mother regarding feeding the newborn.
  • Encourage and reinforce breast feeding techniques.
  • Ensure that the mother has established well-baby care with Bond CHC's pediatrician.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Time Management Skills—The Certified Nurse Midwife is expected to manage time to satisfy organizational and patient needs, while efficiently providing quality care. 
  • Excellent customer service/communication skills The Certified Nurse Midwife is required to possess a high level of communication skills that allows them to clearly and professionally communicate with patients, health center staff,      management, and external partners. 
  • High Ethical Standards-- The Certified Nurse Midwife must maintain very high ethical standards. Honesty and the ability to acknowledge a mistake are important traits for the Certified Nurse Midwife to hold. The Certified Nurse Midwife must be ethical, fair and uphold a high level of integrity in the care and service they provide in their day-to-day work. 
  • Listening Skills-- The Certified Nurse Midwife must be a good listener that is receptive to the patient’s needs, preferences and concerns. They must also be able to receive guidance and direction from the Chief Medical Officer and management. 
  • Professionalism--The Certified Nurse Midwife should always conduct themselves in a professional manner, both inside and      outside of Bond CHC.

People Person-- The Certified Nurse Midwife should possess the ability to interact with people at all levels of the organization. The Certified Nurse Midwife should have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work as a team member, as well as independently, with minimal supervision. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate of nurse midwifery program accredited by or with pre-accreditation status from the division of Accreditation of the American College of Nurse-Midwives.
  • A current Florida State license as a Mid-wife.
  • A current Florida State Certification as a Mid-wife.
