Job Description - Certified Surgical Technologist Educator

Your job is more than a job.

The Certified Surgical Technologist Educator is responsible for providing comprehensive departmental orientation, on-going education and required training, and providing in-services on new products, procedures, and equipment.

Key Responsibilities

Education & Staff Development

  • Develops and delivers orientation for staff, residents, and medical students on surgical technology, sterile technique, and procedures.

  • Maintains orientation documentation and evaluates initial and annual competencies.

  • Provides in-services on new products, equipment, and procedures to ensure safe and efficient practice.

  • Prepares and mentors staff pursuing national surgical technology certification.

  • Precepts new surgical technologists and serves as a clinical resource.

  • Coordinates vendor-led in-services for staff and physicians.

Regulatory Compliance & Quality

  • Ensures departmental compliance with state and accrediting agencies (e.g., DOH, TJC, AST, AORN).

  • Partners with leadership to support quality assurance and infection prevention initiatives.

  • Promotes patient safety, HIPAA compliance, and adherence to all policies, procedures, and ethical standards.

  • Identifies and reports compliance concerns, including fraud and abuse.

Clinical & Surgical Responsibilities

  • Prepares the operating room by gathering and organizing equipment and supplies using strict sterile technique.

  • Verifies equipment functionality and removes defective instruments.

  • Anticipates surgeon and team needs; assists with sterile attire, draping, site preparation, and instrument passing.

  • Maintains accurate counts and supports proper specimen handling and documentation.

  • Assists with wound closure and sterile dressing application.

  • Ensures safe patient positioning and alignment throughout procedures.

  • Participates in room turnover and supports patient throughput goals.

Safety & Equipment Management

  • Educates staff on new supplies and processes; monitors adherence to sterile technique standards.

  • Communicates equipment malfunctions or unsafe conditions.

  • Manages proper disposal of sharps and contaminated items.

  • Evaluates new instruments and maintains appropriate inventory levels.

  • Collaborates with the instrument room to meet daily case demands.

Communication & Teamwork

  • Reviews surgical schedules to anticipate instrumentation needs.

  • Coordinates assignments with charge nurse and team members; adapts to changing priorities.

  • Communicates clearly and professionally with patients, families, physicians, and colleagues.

  • Promotes a culture of respect, service excellence, and collaborative teamwork.

Operational & Financial Stewardship

  • Uses time and resources efficiently; completes assignments independently and on time.

  • Advises leadership of operational issues or anticipated challenges.

  • Resolves scheduling conflicts collaboratively.

  • Maintains accurate documentation and adheres to time and attendance policies.

Minimum Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited Surgical Technologist program
  • 5 years of experience as a surgical technologist in an acute care facility, preferably in a lead or educational role
  • CST - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of creating and maintaining the sterile field in surgical procedures.
  • Ability to guide/lead staff effectively, understand quality and infection control requirements and reporting, and prioritize and manage time appropriately.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, clear communication, and the ability to understand specific instructions.
  • Ability to concentrate on detail and adjust quickly to changes.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills and be able to create own tasks without direct oversight from management.
  • Strong task prioritization skills ​
