Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist/Field Lead (CTRS)

Position Summary:

The Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS)/Field Lead plays a critical role in designing and implementing therapeutic recreation programs that foster growth, independence, and social engagement for individuals with autism. This role integrates behavioral strategies, clinical insight, and outdoor experiential learning to create inclusive, empowering experiences that align with Ascendigo’s mission.

Key Responsibilities:

• Plan, implement, and evaluate therapeutic recreation programs tailored to the needs of individuals with autism.


• Lead and support participants in a variety of recreational activities, including but not limited to outdoor sports, nature-based outings, arts, and life skills development.


• Conduct individual assessments and develop treatment goals using evidence-based practices.


• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including behavior analysts, directors, managers, and direct support staff to ensure cohesive care.


• Maintain accurate documentation, progress notes, and assessments in accordance with professional and organizational standards.
  


• Provide training, coaching, and mentorship to staff and interns in recreational therapy techniques and adaptive strategies.


• Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants during activities and adhere to all risk management protocols.


• Assist in program development and community outreach as needed.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation or a related field.


• Current certification as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC).


• Ideally, a minimum 1–2 years of experience working with individuals with autism or other developmental disabilities.


• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate and support diverse participants.


• Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in adaptive outdoor recreation (e.g., skiing, climbing, equine therapy, rafting).


• Knowledge of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) principles.


• CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).


• Familiarity with trauma-informed care practices.

Work Environment:

• Frequent outdoor work in diverse environmental conditions.


• Physical activity required; must be able to lift 50 lbs and participate in recreational activities.


• May require occasional evening or weekend hours depending on programming.
