Job Description - Chaplain & Director of the Center for Faith and Service

Description

Under the general direction of the Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Services, the Chaplain/Director of Center for Faith & Service ("CFS") directs the operations of CFS which includes the Office of Spiritual Life, the Office of Community Engagement and the Office of Intercultural Engagement. This position supervises a Student Life Fellow, as well as a team of work study students. The mission of CFS is to engage students at levels of self, others, and community in practices of belonging and reflection through programming, community engagement resources, and spiritual care. CFS staff are responsible for programming and events related to faith and spirituality, community engagement and service, and diversity and intercultural engagement. The Chaplain provides pastoral care, spiritual support, and informal counseling for students, partnering closely with the health and counseling staff in the Wellness Center. Additionally, this position and office collaborates with Student Services staff in providing response, direction and assistance during times of crisis on the campus or response to global issues. Collaboration with students, staff, faculty, departments across campus, alumni, board of trustees, parents, and outside groups (alumni, national organizations, etc.) will be key to the success of this position and the Division of Student Services. This is a ten and a half month (10.5) from July 15 - May 31, full-time exempt position, requiring some evening and weekend events. 

Requirements

Essential Functions:

  • Direct the operations Center for Faith & Service including management of administrative, operational, personnel and financial responsibilities. This includes planning, implementing and leading programs for the Office of Spiritual Life, with assistance provided by the Student Services Fellow, and supervising programs offered by the Office of Intercultural Engagement and the Office of Community Engagement. The Chaplain oversees a robust student staff, supervises, hires, and trains all CFS professional staff, and manages all related budgets in partnership with this staff.  
  • Represent the chaplaincy at college ceremonial functions. The Chaplain will plan or participate in the following annual events at the college: Convocation, Lessons and Carols, Baccalaureate, Commencement and other college lectures and events as requested. 
  • Provide pastoral/spiritual care to students, faculty, and staff. The Chaplain is available and accessible for both formal and informal pastoral care and spiritual direction for students of all worldviews. In this role, the Chaplain works closely with the staff of the Wellness Center. It is understood that the Chaplain is also available in this capacity to faculty and staff. 
  • Serves as an institutionally designated Title IX confidential source.
  • Build and strengthen relationships with local churches, synagogues, mosques and other faith-based organizations. The Chaplain works with local religious groups in order to involve them in the life of the college as appropriate and to involve students in the lives of these faith-based communities following student interest. The Chaplain works at strengthening the relationship between the college and the Presbyterian Church (USA) and serves as the liaison for the Presbyterian-related organizations, such as the Association of Presbyterian Colleges and Universities (APCU).   
  • Coordinate internal and external marketing and communication for the Center for Faith & Service. The Chaplain will maintain timely and appropriate communication with the campus community regarding events, opportunities, and programs through the Center for Faith & Service. This includes utilization of social media platforms, email and other established campus communication outlets. 
  • Serve on committees within the department, division, and college as deemed appropriate by the Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Services. The Chaplain will attend Student Services Directors Meetings, 1:1 meeting with the direct supervisor, campus staff meetings, and other meetings as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Develop and review policies, procedures, strategic plans/reports, regular reports for the Center for Faith & Service.
  • Other Duties as assigned by the Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Services.

Job Requirements:

Education:  A Master of Divinity or related degree from and ATS (Association of Theological Schools) accredited institution.? Based upon the demographics and location of the college, it is preferred that the Chaplain be ordained or in the ordination process; however, other qualified candidates will be considered if in good standing with a spiritual tradition or are eligible for professional certification if ordination is not applicable.  

Experience: Experience in higher education or working with college students strongly preferred. Experience in multi-faith and familiarity is requested. 

Skills:  A passionate interest in working with and caring for students in a small residential college setting.? Strong leadership and organizational skills including the willingness and ability to share responsibility for specific activities particularly with students (i.e., demonstrate commitment to student-centered programming approach).? The ability to work with students from different walks of life, (students, faculty, and staff) and a wide variety of religious/nonreligious and social backgrounds.?Must articulate an inclusive theological paradigm or approach to chaplaincy.
