About Us

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Description of Work

This position is located at Mountain View Correctional, Spruce Pine, NC. Mountain View is a medium-custody prison housing male offenders. The facility is designed to house a maximum capacity of 908 offenders.

Positions at this level perform comprehensive, complex professional-level nursing work in providing primary, preventative, and rehabilitative care to individuals and families in a variety of settings, including public health. Employees are responsible for the implementation, coordination and evaluation of patient care, and may assist the nursing supervisor by directly supervising all licensed and unlicensed nursing staff on their assigned shift. Employees in this class performs professional nursing work at the full-performance level providing direct patient care to individuals with varied health problems. Employees in this class serve as a lead nurse and typically work independently with other healthcare professionals. Work includes conducting nursing assessments; developing, implementing and evaluating treatment plans; and providing patient care and education through case management. There is a greater emphasis in independent practice and advanced clinical knowledge/skills. Employees in this class administer medications and treatments as directed by a physician. Employees in this class are responsible for appropriate treatment and medical documentation and may assist the nursing supervisor by directly supervising licensed and unlicensed assigned nursing staff. Performs other related work as required. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Nurse Supervisor.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

NOW ELIGIBLE FOR A $7,500 SIGN-ON BONUS.

To be eligible for a sign-on bonus, the candidate must not have worked as a probationary, permanent, or time-limited employee in the last 12 months as an employee subject to the State Human Resources Act.

Salary Range: $59,732.00 - $98,557.00

Duties for this position include but are not limited to:  

  • Rotates house supervisor responsibilities.
  • Clinical responsibility covers the whole spectrum of assessment and intervention necessary to maintain maximum function and to promote well-being and are inclusive of sick call/assessment,
  • Assisting the physician, carrying out orders, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care.
  • Responding to emergencies.
  • Facilitating mental and dental healthcare.
  • Preparing medication for administration and administering medications,
  • Monitoring for communicable diseases.
  • Counseling form compliance with diet, medications, and treatment regimens.
  • Updating physical examinations, teaching, delegating to or supervising other personnel in implementing the treatment regimen
  • In-depth knowledge of professional principles, practices and theory of nursing and its application as well as laws, rules and regulations governing the provision of nursing care.

Management Preferences:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of basic nursing principles and techniques to include physical assessments, clinical judgments, treatment planning and evaluation.
  • Documented knowledge of supervisory practices and charge nurse roles.

**Work Schedule: This is a night shift position
