As History Colorado strives to meet broad strategic goals in service of Colorado’s communities, we are seeking an entrepreneurial and inclusive leader to contribute proactive, strategic, and visionary leadership in building a thriving organization.
The Chief Administrative Officer is responsible for:
Strategic leadership of key departments, including Finance, Budget, Procurement, IT, Facilities, and Evaluation, in operationalizing History Colorado’s goals and values

Overseeing and guiding the work of the Finance and Budget teams to ensure a growth mindset, the thoughtful allocation of resources and strategic investment, as well as compliance with state fiscal rules

Ensuring the organization strategically plans for and management its resources, including the maintenance of Facilities, including numerous historic properties

Developing and maintaining strong working relationships with key strategic partners within and outside the state system

Leadership
The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) reports directly to the President and CEO of History Colorado. This position provides instructional leadership to department managers, supports and operationalizes the organization’s strategic plan, develops and implements budgets, oversees data collection and evaluation, and prepares and presents financial reports and forecasts to the CEO and the Board of Directors. This position is part of the organizational leadership team, and supports strategic planning and setting the short and long term goals of the organization. This includes oversight and direction of shared services including finance, procurement, facilities and IT.
The CAO provides guidance and advice on organizational decision making, utilizing a broad, comprehensive knowledge of the financial and the political structure of a large and complex organization and the environment that surrounds it. The CAO uses vision and experience to help steer the organization into a successful future, is forward-thinking and thinks strategically, anticipates future consequences and trends, and shares that knowledge with the rest of the organization. To do this, this position collaborates with departments across the organization on issues that need to be addressed by top management, especially related to decisions and actions that may impact our employees, our supporters, and our customers.
Budget and Finance:
The CAO leads the budget and finance work of the organization, which is both a state agency and a non-profit organization. The CAO:
Oversees and guides the administrative team and the organization through the state of Colorado financial practices, procedures and requirements.

Oversees and guides the administrative team and the organization through non-profit financial practices, procedures and requirements.

Leads the organization-wide budgeting and financial forecasting and data-driven decision making.

Leads the organization in building a culture of business thinking and financial sustainability.

Manages the capital request and budgeting processes.

Oversees the finance department, including payroll, procurement, budget and all aspects of the accounting department.

Oversees the distribution of financial information to staff and Board to facilitate informed, business-focused decision making.

Administrative Operations:
The CAO uses vision, experience, and data to provide oversight to the administrative operations that serve History Colorado's many different departments, sites and operations throughout the statewide organization. In addition to the Budget and Finance, these administrative operations include:

Information Technology

Evaluation and Impact

Facilities

The CAO works with the staff leading each of these functions in developing policies and procedures that will coordinate and guide the organization’s activities and decision-making in each of these areas.
Strategic Relationships
The CAO serves as the key liaison between History Colorado and several important agencies. Fostering healthy and mutually beneficial relationships on behalf of the organization is a crucial part of the CAO's role. These agencies include:
Office of State Planning and Budget (for annual budget planning)

State Department of Higher Education

(coordinating budget requests and common policy issues, as well as supporting each other’s goals and objectives)

Office of the State Controller (for accounting and fiscal rule compliance)

Office of the State Architect (for capital project requests and project execution)

Legislative Council Joint Budget Committee Staff (for annual budget planning and special projects driven by legislation)

Office of the State Auditor (for annual audit)

Colorado Historical Foundation (for support in special areas)

Georgetown Loop Railroad/Historic Rail Adventures (contract oversight)

This position requires, a passionate professional with:
An entrepreneurial and human-centered approach to the work of History Colorado and its workforce

A Bachelor's degree in Organizational Development, or a business-related field. Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA) preferred.

10 years of experience in a leadership role, which must have included managing professional-level staff required.

Deep knowledge of financial systems, accounting practices, and business practices with 10 years of experience with fiscal management is required.

10 years of experience with project management required

Experience and understanding of both public-sector and non-profit sector accounting and finance.

Ability to work with and communicate with a wide variety of stakeholders across the state of Colorado.

Ability to look for solutions within limitations and challenges.

10 years of experience in museum management or similar organizations is preferred.

Strong project management and facilitation skills guiding internal community and staff through complex situations

Exceptional communication, leadership, and organizing skills

A successful

Chief Administrative Officer

will possess the following temperament and character traits:

Proven record of success in managing the finances, compliance, and operations of a complex organization
