Job Description - Chief Financial Officer

Description

Directs the organization’s financial planning and accounting practices as well as its relationship with lending institutions and the financial community.  Oversees and directs treasury, budgeting, audit, accounting, real estate and insurance activities for the organization.  Responsible for providing and directing procedures and systems necessary to maintain proper records and to afford adequate accounting controls and services.

Job Qualifications: 

While we do not expect any one candidate to possess all of these qualifications, the ideal candidate will possess many of the following professional and personal skills and qualities: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, or a related field required. A Master’s degree preferred. 
  • At least 10 years of senior operational and financial leadership, ideally in a nonprofit, managing a budget of $25M+; experience with budgets of $45M or greater is preferred. 
  • Direct experience working with and supporting Boards of Directors and Board committees. 
  • Demonstrated success in cross-functional collaboration and leading systems development across teams. 
  • Proven ability to build organizational infrastructure, manage change, and support long-term strategic growth. 
  • Strong financial acumen, including audit, compliance, investment, and cash flow management. 
  • Knowledge of governance, risk management, and nonprofit regulatory compliance. 
  • Excellent communication, relationship-building, and leadership skills. 
  • Proven track record of success in strategic planning and execution, financial management, and organizational development. 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make sound decisions based on financial data. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of effectively engaging with diverse stakeholders. 

This role requires a dynamic leader who can balance strategic vision with operational execution, ensuring the organization's financial health and operational effectiveness align with its mission-driven objectives. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

The individual must be comfortable with prolonged periods of sitting and/or standing at a desk and working on a computer. Reasonable accommodations may be made to provide access to all individuals along the continuum of human ability and experience. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  1. Oversees and directs Medical Records, Business Office and Financial Services departments. 
  2. Directs and coordinates day-to-day operation of the hospital. 
  3. Monitor all hospital departments to assure the philosophy, objectives and policies established by the governing body and directed by the Administrator are being carried out. 
  4. Directs functions of the hospital by supporting department managers whom are responsible for achieving department objectives.  
  5. Interacts with employees and maintain a positive atmosphere and participative work environment. 
  6. Meets regularly with department managers to review department activities and functions and make recommendations as needed. 
  7. Maintains regular contact with employees, medical staff and patients to discuss services, problems and exchange information. 
  8. Assists the Administrator in planning and overall direction of the hospital. 
  9. Performs work on special projects directed by the Administrator. 
  10. Provides information for review and revision of hospital policies, procedures and practices. 
  11. Recommends equipment and facility acquisitions or modifications. 
  12. Assists with the preparation of the budget and the monitoring of the  utilization of approved budget resources. 
  13. Prepares periodic reports for the Administrator regarding professional services, financial activities, quality of patient care and other special interest areas. 
  14. Participates in the facility’s long-term and short-term financial process. 
  15. Ensures that all appropriate laws and regulations governing  healthcare finances are followed. 
  16. Coordinates and controls the facility’s cash activities. 
  17. Provides advice and assistance to department managers in  analyzing and interpreting financial data and reports and in presenting that information to their departments and or physician groups. 
  18. Assists in evaluating the adequacy of the hospital’s insurance coverage and providing advice and guidance as necessary in preparing and analyzing executive responsive actions. 
  19. Directs and Coordinates the Financial Management Area of Hospital. 
  20. Manages the financial programs and supporting information systems of the hospital to include budgeting, receipt of revenue, expenditure of funds and conservations of assets. 
  21. Oversees the approval and processing of revenue and expenditure, department budgets, maintenance of accounts and ledgers, ensuring compliance with hospital policies and procedures to ensure appropriate internal control safeguards. 
  22. Develops, implements, interprets and coordinates the application of finance, accounting, billing and audit procedures. 
  23. Directs and participates in the development of accounting, admission, credit/collection and internal control policies and systems and addresses related policy/system issues. 
  24. Participates in the analysis of the financial implications of proposed capital projects and expenditures and recommends the execution of appropriate measures to respond to projected economic trends and/or regulatory changes. 
  25. Prepares financial reports for the CEO for Board presentation. 
  26. In-services staff as needed in budget development, both capital and operating. 
  27. Motivates and manages staff to ensure that performance standards are met or exceeded.
