Job Description - Chief Financial Officer

CMES, Inc. is seeking a CFO to direct and oversee the financial activities of the company, direct the preparation of current financial reports and summaries, and create forecasts predicting future growth. The CFO is a key member of the executive leadership team that plays a critical role in developing financial strategies to support the company’s strategic objectives and growth in a competitive industry.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and oversee all accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting functions.

  • Provide strategic financial leadership and insights into the executive leadership team.

  • Implement and monitor KPIs to track financial health and drive performance.

  • Develop and maintain effective internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure accurate financial reporting.

  • Manage relationships with banks, bonding companies, auditors, insurance providers, and tax advisors.

  • Monitor cash flow, job cost controls, and financial performance across all projects.

  • Compares profit projections to actual figures and budgeted expenses to actual expenses; makes or oversees any necessary adjustments to future projections and budgets.

  • Support the estimating and project management teams with financial analysis, margin control, and cost forecasting.

  • Oversee and support long-range financial planning and capital expenditure decisions.

  • Supervise accounting staff ensuring professional development and cross-training.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, field required

  • Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration preferred.

  • Certified Public Accountant designation preferred.

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive financial leadership experience with at least 5 years being in the construction industry. Heavy civil highway industry preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of construction accounting and job costing.

  • Proven experience in leading financial strategy and operations for a privately held business. Experience working with construction ERP systems (e.g. Viewpoint Vista, Sage 300, or similar). Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate.

  • High integrity and commitment to ethical financial stewardship.

  • Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices.

  • Ability to follow and adhere to established safety procedures.

  • Knowledge of DOT-funded project requirements and public infrastructure contracts preferred.

Compensation: $180,000.00 - $220,000.00 per year
