Chief Financial Officer (CFO) - Construction

Job Description - Chief Financial Officer (CFO) - Construction

Chief Financial Officer (CFO) / Construction & Shared Services Organization

Location: Tempe, AZ | In-Office
Schedule: Monday - Friday | 8 am – 5 pm

A growing shared services organization is seeking a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to lead the financial operations of its Arizona-based construction and industrial operating companies. While accounting and administrative resources are supported through a centralized shared services model, this individual will serve as the primary financial leader for the Arizona region, partnering closely with ownership and operational leaders to drive growth, profitability, and financial performance.

Success in this role comes from being equally comfortable in the boardroom, at a jobsite, or working alongside the accounting team to solve day-to-day business challenges.

It's an opportunity for a hands-on finance leader who enjoys partnering with ownership, solving operational challenges, improving systems, and helping growing businesses become even stronger.

Initially, you'll provide financial leadership across four construction-related companies, with additional growth anticipated as the organization continues to expand. You'll work closely with ownership to strengthen financial reporting, improve processes, oversee cash flow, job costing, forecasting, banking relationships, and help build the financial infrastructure needed to support long-term success.

This role requires direct financial leadership experience gained while employed by a construction company — general contractor, subcontractor, specialty trade, developer, or homebuilder. Experience with job costing or WIP reporting gained in adjacent industries (manufacturing, engineering, real estate/property management) does not substitute for this requirement.

The successful candidate will combine strong financial leadership with a practical understanding of construction operations, serving as a strategic business partner to ownership while helping build the systems, processes, and financial infrastructure needed to support future growth.

This could be a great fit if you are:

  • A Controller at a construction company ready to step into your first CFO role

  • A Director or VP of Finance currently working inside a commercial construction company seeking broader operational influence

  • A CFO currently or recently leading finance for a construction company

Why This Role Stands Out

  • Opportunity to support multiple operating companies with diverse business operations

  • Direct partnership with ownership and executive leadership

  • Ability to shape systems, processes, and financial infrastructure as the organization continues to grow

  • Broad exposure to operational and strategic decision-making beyond traditional accounting responsibilities

  • Collaborative and entrepreneurial culture

  • Planned transition and overlap period with the current CFO to support onboarding and long-term success

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Provide financial leadership across multiple operating companies and business units

  • Lead cash flow management, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to ownership, providing financial insight and recommendations that support strategic business decisions

  • Develop reporting tools, KPIs, dashboards, and financial insights to support decision-making

  • Oversee job costing, work-in-progress reporting, project profitability analysis, and operational performance metrics

  • Support profitability analysis, project analysis, and long-range growth planning

  • Lead financial systems improvements, software conversions, ERP initiatives, and process standardization efforts that support future growth

  • Oversee accounting operations, monthly close processes, audits, and external financial relationships

  • Manage banking, lending, bonding, and key financial partner relationships

  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, visibility, and financial performance across the organization

  • Lead, mentor, and develop accounting and finance team members

What We’re Looking For

  • Direct, hands-on financial leadership experience as an employee — not solely as an outside consultant or fractional CFO — within a construction company

  • Experience managing job costing and WIP specifically within construction operations, including subcontractor billing, retainage, AIA billing, change orders, bonding, and project profitability (job costing experience from manufacturing, engineering, or property management does not meet this requirement)

  • The ability to prioritize across multiple businesses while building consistency, accountability, and financial visibility

  • Experience with cash flow management, forecasting, and budgeting at the multi-entity level

  • Ability to build strong relationships with ownership, leadership teams, and operational stakeholders

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills

  • A hands-on, collaborative leadership style with the ability to balance strategic thinking with day-to-day operational execution

  • Technology-forward mindset with interest in ERP systems, software conversions, and process improvement

  • Experience leading, mentoring, and developing accounting/finance team members

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required

  • 7+ years of progressive accounting, finance, or operational finance leadership experience preferred

  • Prior experience working directly for a construction company required — general contractor, subcontractor, or specialty trade

  • Experience with ERP systems, software implementations, or financial system conversions preferred

  • CPA, MBA, or prior CFO title welcomed but not required

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive compensation starting at $130,000+, depending on experience

  • 401(k) with employer match

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance

  • Paid time off and holidays

  • Long-term growth opportunity within an expanding organization
