Job Description - Chief Medical Physicist

CHIEF MEDICAL PHYSICIST
Under the direction of the Radiology Director and the Chief of Radiation Oncology, provides professional medical physics for the Radiation Oncology service. Assumes a lead position in planning and establishing a treatment planning and dosimetry service. Evaluates and interprets medical radiation treatment prescriptions. Collaborates with radiation oncologists in the design and modification of effective radiation treatments for patients; oversees and monitors treatment plans developed by dosimetrists, and establishes an effective quality assurance program for the service.

Responsibilities:

  • In cooperation with the Radiology Director, Radiation Oncologists,

Therapist Manager, and Nurse Manager of Hematology/Oncology establishes the

treatment planning service. Evaluates planning and simulation software and

equipment, specifies final configurations, implements and tests systems.

  • Determines required junior physicist and dosimetrist staffing. Recruits,

interviews, trains, supervises and evaluates planning service staff. Prepares staff

assignments and schedules to match workload.

  • Develops equipment specifications for radiation therapy treatment,

simulation, planning, brachytherapy, and therapeutic radiation detection

equipment.

  • Develops procedures for initial and continuing evaluation of radiation

therapy treatment, simulation, planning, brachytherapy, and therapeutic radiation

detection equipment, computer systems, and software. Performs acceptance

testing of equipment, computer systems, algorithms, data, and output.

  • Oversees and coordinates the activities of physicists, dosimetrists, and

simulation therapists in the planning service.

  • Develops, implements, and evaluates policies and procedures related to

appropriate use of therapeutic radiation, simulation, and treatment planning

in conjunction with the Radiation Oncolocists, Therapist Manager, and

Nurse Manager.

  • Provides guidance on correct coding and billing for simulation, planning,

and brachytherapy procedures. Works with team members on an ongoing basis to update charge master and assure billing compliance.

  • Develops and manages a comprehensive Quality Management Program that

monitors and evaluates critical radiation oncology equipment and processes

and strives to optimize them.

  • Maintains professional contact with peers through professional association

membership, attendance at professional meetings and related activities. Keeps

abreast of developments within the service. Identifies opportunities for improvement, efficiency, and savings. Plans and implements changes

  • Designs and implements a course in the physics of medical imaging for the

Radiology Residency Program. Provides an annual coures including

lectures and reference materials for radiology residents.

  • Implements and monitors a comprehensive clinical radiation safety

program in radiation oncology.

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Radiation Therapeutic Medical Physics or an equivalent field or discipline with at least 5 years of directly related work experience.

  • Board Certification as a Medical Physicist (ABR, ABMP, or equivalent)

  • In depth knowledge and understanding of current radiation therapy principles, mehods, procedures, and techniques.

  • Strong supervisory, communication, interpersonal and team building skills.

  • Advanced knowledge of radiation safety principles, Federal, State, and local regulations for the provision of radiation therapy services.

  • Broad product knowledge in the area of specialty and ability to develop purchasing specifications.

 

 

Pay Range:

$193,440.00 USD - $260,345.00 USD

The pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.
