Job Title: Children's Counselor

Program(s): Behavioral Health

State: Phoenix, Arizona

Reports To: Clinical Supervisor

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

 

SUMMARY

The Children's Counselor is primarily responsible for assessing children's needs and providing individual and family psychotherapy. Services will be evidence-based and focused on children referred to HRTs FAST program.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts therapeutic visits with the client and/or their family. Treatment services should involve a family component when possible and should seek to strengthen family relationships by improving communication and improving family members’ ability to support the juvenile’s treatment progress.
  • Reviews and follows a service treatment plan that addresses the client’s current level of functioning and update as necessary.
  • Provides structured sessions occurring for a specific, authorized period that work toward the attainment of mutually defined goals as specified in the treatment plan.
  • Assists in identification and utilization of community resources and natural supports, and after care support services.
  • Maintains regular contact with families and additional team members as needed.
  • Completes required reports and documentation in a timely manner, provides case management with required reports and advises of any problematic situations.
  • Documents attendance, level of participation, and comprehension of activities, on the same day of service delivery.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity to linguistic, cultural, social, economic, individual and role differences among persons and families served.
  • Attends and makes reports to the Child and Family Team (CFT) during CFT meetings as requested.
  • Maintains records of mileage traveled in course of job performance and submits documentation to the Program Supervisor on a monthly basis.
  • Attends and completes a minimum of twenty-four hours of job-related training annually.
  • Commits to attending all program meetings, in-service trainings and regular communication with team members.
  • Schedules and attends a minimum of 4 hours of supervision per month, which must include 1 hour of individual clinical supervision and at least 3 hours of group supervision through program meetings.
  • Ensures the safety, health and welfare of staff and families at all times.
  • Models and ensures all program norms are upheld without compromise.
  • Acts as a positive role model and mentor for both staff and families.
  • Treats others with respect, confronts negative behavior and supports confrontation.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelors’ Degree in Social Work, Counseling, Human Services or related field required.
  • 1-2 years documented full-time experience providing therapeutic or non-therapeutic treatment services to the child welfare population.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid unrestricted Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card.
  • Must meet the requirements to be a safe driver.  Must possess a current Arizona State Driver’s License and have an acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years.  Must have personal vehicle liability insurance and vehicle registration as required.
  • Must be able to pass a DCS Clearance with no substantiated reports.
  • When required, the ability to pass a criminal background clearance check, drug screen, and if requested a physical exam.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule.
  • Must be able to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Must obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid certification.

  • Language Skills

Ability to respond effectively displaying professionalism, sensitivity, and empathy to linguistic, cultural, social, economic, and individual differences and challenges. Ability to write and maintain accurate and timely documentation. Ability to present information 1:1 and to groups in an organized and concise manner.

  • Multi-tasking Skills

Must be able to work independently as well as a member of a team. Must have excellent organizational and time management skills. Must remain flexible and able to handle multiple priorities with the ability to adjust to high pressure and rapidly changing business conditions.

  • Reasoning Ability

Ability to quickly assess unique situations and develop and apply strategies to effectively meet the needs of the child and family. Ability to interpret contracts and ensure compliance. Ability to provide exemplary service to employees and outside constituents.

  • Skills, knowledge and ability to instruct clients in the following topics:  child development, home management, personal problem solving, accessing community services, and supports domestic violence issues, appropriate discipline and childcare techniques and age appropriate parenting skills.
  • Knowledge of Arizona's foster care system.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple people and projects.
  • Ability to function independently and as a member of a team in a multi-task environment.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must have excellent organization and time management skills.
  • Proficient in the use of computers and associated software.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive internal and external relationships.
  • Ability to provide exemplary customer service to all employees and outside constituents.
  • Must be flexible and able to handle multiple priorities, with the ability to adjust to high pressure and rapidly changing business conditions.
