Job Description - Civilian Criminal Investigator-Internal Only

CIVILIAN CRIMINAL INVESTIGATOR


Position Summary


The Civilian Criminal Investigator is a non-sworn civilian position within the Lone Tree Police Department responsible for conducting criminal investigations, gathering and analyzing evidence, preparing case documentation, and assisting prosecutors in the successful prosecution of criminal cases. This position works collaboratively with sworn officers, prosecutors, and community partners to support the Department’s mission of ensuring safety, justice, and trust within the Lone Tree community.  This position direct reports to the Investigations Sergeant.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities



  • Conducts criminal investigations under the direction of supervisory personnel, with a primary focus on property crimes, fraud, financial crimes, and other non-violent offenses.

  • Interviews victims, witnesses, complainants, and suspects to gather detailed statements and corroborating information in a controlled environment.

  • Collects, processes, and preserves physical and digital evidence while maintaining strict chain-of-custody standards.

  • Prepares affidavits, subpoenas, and other investigative documents; assists with the preparation of search and arrest warrants as directed.

  • Reviews police reports, surveillance footage, records, and databases to develop leads and identify investigative patterns.

  • Completes detailed investigative reports and compiles case files suitable for prosecutorial and court review.

  • Testifies in municipal, county, state, or federal court as needed.

  • Provides updates and support to victims and witnesses, ensuring appropriate referrals to available resources.

  • Coordinates with other law enforcement agencies, financial institutions, and regulatory bodies when investigations cross jurisdictional lines.

  • Performs other administrative duties and responsibilities as assigned in an office setting and aligned with support of the Investigations Unit objectives.

  • May assist with new applicant background investigations as needed.



Minimum Qualifications



  • Education:
    Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Sociology, Forensic Science, or a closely related field preferred. Equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

  • Experience:

    • Two (2) years of professional experience in law enforcement investigations, fraud analysis, legal case preparation, or related work required.

    • Experience in fraud, financial crime, or evidence management is strongly preferred.



  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Extensive knowledge of criminal investigation practices, rules of evidence, and applicable laws.

    • Strong interviewing, fact-finding, and analytical skills.

    • Excellent report-writing ability with attention to clarity and detail.

    • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and law enforcement records management systems (RMS).

    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work effectively with diverse populations.

    • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately.



  • Licenses/Certifications:

    • Valid Colorado driver’s license.

    • Must successfully pass a background investigation, polygraph, and drug screen.





Working Conditions and Physical Requirements



  • Work is performed primarily in an office setting including witness/suspect interviews, with limited fieldwork involving scene visits and evidence collection.

  • May be required to work evenings, weekends, or holidays as investigative demands dictate.

  • May be placed in an on-call rotation for significant events/crimes.

  • Work involves regular use of computers, phones, and standard office equipment.

  • Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds, bending, standing, or extended periods of sitting.



Compensation and Benefits



  • Salary Range: $67,098-$83,873-$100,647 

  • Comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, retirement plan contributions, paid holidays, vacation, and relevant training.
