POSITION SUMMARY:
Virginia Farm Bureau is looking for an intern to work closely with our Claims Department. This internship will provide 2 candidates with the opportunity to work with multiple positions with the Claims Department. You will have the opportunity to observe investigations, negotiations, evaluations, inspections, and reporting on all insurance losses. You will also have the opportunity to observe resolution of cases where money is due to the company as a result of its subrogation and contribution rights.
LOCATION
This position will primarily be in the office based in our beautiful West Creek office location. There will be some fieldwork opportunities.
Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 4:30pm
This is a paid internship and will run between 10-to-12-weeks.
PRIMARY DUTIES
- Review incoming files for subrogation potential and evaluate cases based on Claims Representatives’ investigations.
- Observe the negotiation of suit cases with statewide and local counsel.
- Research and prepare cases for arbitration.
- Review mail from attorneys to determine future action.
- Observe and maintain communication with case managers, law enforcement officials, commonwealth’s attorneys, and claimants when necessary to effect collection.
- Maintain timely contact with insureds and claimants.
- Observe evaluations of direct field claims.
- Develop professional relationships with car rental, auto body shops and contractors.
- Diary and reserve open claims, set up new claims and process incoming mail daily.
- Make rental car reservations in accordance with company procedures.
- Schedule appointments for drive-in claims service.
- Observe evaluations of total loss settlements.
- Help process salvage on total loss vehicles.
- Help write estimates on damaged vehicles, as required.
- Observe preparations of repair and total loss appraisals in accordance with company and industry procedures.
- Observe re-inspect vehicles during repairs and authorize supplemental repairs and/or payments as needed.
- Observe settling total loss vehicles and moving salvage within time limits established for this procedure.
- Observe investigations on all losses assigned.
- Comply with company policies and procedures in the handling of all losses and other
- company matters.
- Observe the reporting of all activity on all claim files to the company promptly.
- Promptly reply to all complaints as requested.
- Know company software systems used for estimating property losses.
- Help advise Underwriting Department on all poor risks.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
- Assist and give guidance to other claim personnel as requested.
- All other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

- Working towards a college degree or equivalent work experience
