Classroom Facilitator

Overview: 

The Last Mile, a San Francisco, CA-based non-profit, is the first prison program in the U.S. to provide in-prison software engineering training. Position Description:
The classroom facilitator works on-site with incarcerated students enrolled in TLM programs (including the Web Development and Audio Engineering Programs).

Classroom facilitators play a pivotal role in our organization by working closely with students in TLM classrooms to support program objectives and foster a positive classroom community. While our students primarily engage in independent computer-based learning, classroom facilitators orchestrate various elements to ensure an effective and conducive learning environment. They are the driving force behind in-facility classroom operations, responsible for maintaining technical equipment, coordinating installations and maintenance, facilitating remote instruction sessions, and assisting students in identifying personal and professional development goals. This position strongly emphasizes enhancing the overall student experience, building rapport, and cultivating a nurturing classroom culture through group meetings and activities.

Classroom Operations: 

• Foster and maintain a constructive classroom atmosphere conducive to effective learning


• Facilitate weekly remote sessions for students.


• Adjust, track, and schedule due dates to meet student needs, facility culture, and unexpected challenges.


• Serve as students' primary point of contact, offering feedback and insights to TLM’s Classroom Operations Manager.


• Establish rapport with students and promote their well-being through empathetic listening, support, and advocacy.


• Provide feedback to the TLM’s Remote Instruction team to improve content delivery.


• Empower students to set and work towards individual goals and advocate for their needs.

Administrative: 

• Oversee classroom operations, including opening and closing rooms for students, while adhering to all required prison security protocols.


• Maintain records of student and equipment issues.


• Provide feedback to TLM teams to enhance program operations and effectiveness.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

• Demonstrated academic, professional, and/or volunteer experience in leadership or facilitator roles involving diverse groups 


• Proficiency in working with technology, computers, and navigating websites

Responsibilities and Qualifications:

• Excellent communication skills, including empathetic listening


• Strong situational awareness and the ability to remain calm under stress and in variable conditions


• Confidence in speaking to groups of various sizes in a teaching situation


• Ability to guide students to discover answers to their questions


• Maintain a positive and supportive attitude at all times


• Provide honest and constructive feedback and appropriate encouragement to students
