Clean Water Fellow

JOB SUMMARY

The Clean Water Fellowship is a two-year rotational program that provides recent college graduates with an interest in the water industry an opportunity to work within several areas across the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District while participating in professional development workshops, career development programs and other networking opportunities. Clean Water Fellows will work with a variety of professionals to learn how the Sewer District leads the region in wastewater treatment and stormwater management.

Clean Water Fellows will rotate through several departments including, but not limited to, Engineering & Construction, Watershed Programs and Operation & Maintenance to assist with special projects and day-to-day assignments. They will collaborate with various departments and consultants to complete technical projects. Clean Water Fellows can select a department to focus their experience in year two, following the completion of all rotations, contingent on available work. Performs duties of a similar nature as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Participates in structured assignments across Sewer District departments to develop knowledge of wastewater treatment, stormwater management, engineering, construction, administration, operations, technology, finance and community engagement.


• Performs entry-level engineering and analysis work, utilizing engineering theory and problem-solving skills.


• Supports wastewater treatment and operational activities through process evaluation, sampling, data analysis, reporting and asset assessments.


• Supports Watershed Programs through stormwater and environmental inspections, Geographic Information System (GIS) and asset data management, regulatory compliance, laboratory analysis, industrial monitoring, stormwater fee credit programs and Green Infrastructure initiatives.


• Assists with the review of technical deliverables including design drawings and specifications, technical memoranda and project data.


• Utilizes Excel, SharePoint and GIS to assist with data evaluation and management.


• Conducts research, data collection, sampling, field observations, inspections, analysis and Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) activities.


• Assists with Capital Improvement Planning, project scopes, budgets, schedules, Business Risk Exposure assessments and asset management initiatives.


• Collaborates with District departments, consultants, contractors, manufacturers’ representatives, community partners and other stakeholders.


• Completes an enterprise innovation or continuous improved project for a specific department addressing a District priority and develops project documentation, recommendations and an executive presentation.

Fellowship Program Responsibilities

• Participates in development programs including but not limited to Lunch & Learns, Meet & Greets, Professional Development, Employee Resource Groups, volunteer programs, etc.


• Demonstrates professionalism, accountability, adaptability, continuous learning and commitment to the Sewer District’s mission and values.


• Actively participate in the Sewer District’s mentorship program, demonstrating a willingness to receive guidance, feedback, and coaching while building skills and professional growth.


• Attends all meetings or community events as required by each rotation.


• Performs other duties of a similar nature as may be required.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION

Candidate must be a recent graduate within the past two (2) years, or be a current college senior expected to graduate prior to the program start date. Candidate must possess or be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Water Resource Management, Environmental or Civil Engineering or a related field of study.

EXPERIENCE

• No previous experience required.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

During the course of performing the essential functions of this position, the employee must be able to analyze, communicate, comprehend, coordinate, make decisions, possess general intelligence, interact, interpret, negotiate, possess numerical intelligence, organize, problem solve, have resilience and perform tasks. Physical work will need to be performed, such as balancing, bending, climbing, crawling, crouching, driving, feeling, kneeling/squatting, reaching, sitting, standing, talking, typing and walking. Repetitive movements will need to be performed such as simple grasping, power grasping and fine manipulation with both hands. Ability to push, pull and lift from floor to waist, waist to shoulder or floor to shoulder up to 100 lbs. on an occasional basis may be necessary. Position will require visual demands of accommodation, color vision, depth perception, far acuity and near acuity. Ability to withstand very loud noise exposure for fifteen minutes or longer on an infrequent basis is required. Exposure to environmental conditions such as respiratory hazards, extreme cold/heat (non-weather related), outdoor work, vibrations, wet/humid conditions, work around large machinery, work at heights and work inside confined spaces is encountered in this position.
