Job Description - Clinic Patient Care Technician 1.0 FTE

FTE/Scheduled Weekly Hours:

1.00 / 40 / 1st Shift (United States of America)Monday- Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
The Clinic Patient Care Technician will provide direct and indirect patient care, working within the scope of a Certified Nursing Assistant. Providing a variety of services to maintain operations and patient flow throughout the clinic.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1.    Reception

  • Greets the patient/family in a professional, friendly manner.  
  • Answers incoming calls, transfer calls, and communicates information appropriately and in a polite manner.  
  • Sorts and distributes incoming mail.
  • Collects insurance information, photo ID’s, new patient information, Conditions of Admission form, health history, and insurance co-payment from patient or patient representative.  
  • Scans patient documents into EMR and appropriately places document within patient’s EMR.
  • Accurately keys patient information into EMR to complete registration process.  
  • Presents Notice of Privacy Practices pamphlet to patient or representative and ensures the Acknowledgement of Receipt of Notice form is signed.  
  • Upon patient arrival and departure, receptionist will update visit status in EMR. Maintains patients’ electronic records, accurately documenting care provided in a timely manner and ensuring confidentiality at all times.

2.    Patient care

  • Prepares patient for examination and/or tests as appropriate for visit.  Assists with exams and minor office procedures as needed.
  • Assists with direct patient care within scope of practice.
  • Effectively communicates with patients, families, providers, outside agencies, and hospital personnel regarding patients’ hospitalization and/or clinic visit.  Works with other members of the nursing services staff.  Uses tact, patience, and understanding when dealing with patients.  Treats them with respect and dignity at all times.   
  • Initiates contact with appropriate health care personnel and referral resources.  Initiates actions for concerns identified.  Seeks assistance from manager when appropriate.
  • Maintains condition of equipment and supplies related to patient care.  Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly at all times, and provides for the repair, restocking, or replacement of supplies and equipment.

3.    Maintains a working knowledge of the following processes and is able to perform effectively:

  • Patient referral process: schedules tests/procedures as directed, contacts insurance company to obtain prior authorization. 
  • Lab QC checks, lab collection and processing procedures.
  • Supply ordering process including the removal of expired supplies.
  • Adherence to all applicable WHC and regulatory requirements.
  • Scans incoming/outgoing paper documents as directed, organizes documents within EMR as instructed, checking for accuracy and clarity.  Manipulates scanned documents so they are easily read.    

4.    Utilizes Standard Precautions as appropriate.  Demonstrates appropriate instrument safety precautions/care when cleaning, disinfecting, and preparing instruments for sterilization.  Carries out medical asepsis during treatments and special procedures.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1.    Education, Experience, and Training

  • Must possess high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Medical Secretary training or knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
  • Must have successfully completed a minimum of Nurse Aide I course and competency exams and be listed as eligible for employment on the Iowa Direct Care Worker Registry (Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals Health Facilities Division).  Completion of Nurse Aide II course preferred. 
  • Ability to learn and navigate computer systems including the online training modules, the employee timesheet and the performance appraisal system. Job specific systems are also required.
  • Must be able to read, speak, and write fluent English.

2.    Physical Requirements

  • Sitting – Approximately 25% of shift.
  • Standing– Approximately 50% of shift.
  • Walking – Approximately 50% of shift.
  • Lifting – Approximately 35 pounds. Must use, and require staff to use, when in hospital and pre-hospital settings, proper body mechanics and ergonomics and, as applicable, lifting/moving devices.
  • Twisting – Infrequent.
  • Bending – Moderate.
  • Squat/Kneel – Approximately 25% of shift.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
1.    May come in contact with hazardous chemicals or treatment modalities.
2.    The possibility exists of exposure to communicable disease due to working in a healthcare environment.
3.    Involvement in patient care may result in unavoidable work-related illnesses.
