Clinical Assistant Professor, Nutrition and Dietetics

The Clinical Assistant Professor in Nutrition and Dietetics within the College of Health and Human Sciences (CHHS) is a 9-month faculty position. The anticipated start date of employment is August 1, 2026.  

Primary responsibilities include: Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Nutrition and Dietetics, including Medical Nutrition Therapy and related nutrition courses in traditional (in-person), laboratory, hybrid, and online formats. Integrate medical nutrition therapy concepts into applied and experiential learning opportunities. Develop and deliver engaging learning experiences that connect clinical nutrition knowledge with real-world practice. Provide nutrition counseling and wellness services to students, faculty, and staff through individual and group education initiatives (in partnership with Campus Recreation). Serve as a preceptor and mentor to undergraduate and graduate dietetic students during supervised practice and experiential learning activities. Teach and support community-focused culinary medicine and other nutrition programming. Develop innovative educational opportunities, workshops, and continuing education initiatives related to nutrition, counseling, culinary medicine, and wellness. Collaborate with campus and community partners to expand nutrition education and wellness programming. Engage in service activities at the academic unit, college, university, and professional levels. 

The College of Health and Human Sciences (https://www.memphis.edu/healthsciences/) offers the B.S. degree in Health Studies with concentrations in Health Sciences; Dietetics; Exercise, Sport & Movement Sciences; and Healthcare Leadership; the B.S. in Sport and Entertainment Management; the B.A degree in Hospitality and Resort Management (through the Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality and Resort Management); and the B.S.Ed. degree in Physical Education Teacher Education. The college also offers the M.S. degree in Health Studies with concentrations in Exercise Nutrition; Exercise, Sport & Movement Sciences; Lifestyle Medicine; and Physical Education Teacher Education. A second M.S. degree is offered in Sport Commerce, with a third M.S. degree offered in Nutrition with concentrations in Integrated Nutrition; Environmental Nutrition; and Nutrition Science. The college also offers PhD programs in Applied Biomechanics and Applied Physiology and Nutrition, as well as the Doctor of Physical Therapy. There are approximately 1900 undergraduate and graduate majors within CHHS. The University of Memphis is recognized by the Carnegie Foundation as a Research 1 Institution, one of only three in the state of TN. It has a diverse population of approximately 20,000 students including approximately 4,000 graduate students. 

An earned master’s degree in Nutrition and Dietetics or a closely related field is required at the time of hire. Credentialing as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) through the Commission on Dietetic Registration is required. Current licensure or eligibility for licensure as a dietitian/nutritionist in the State of Tennessee is required. Minimum of three years of professional experience in clinical nutrition, medical nutrition therapy, counseling, or related practice areas required. Demonstrated ability to effectively teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate students in classroom, laboratory, counseling, and experiential learning settings is required. College-level teaching experience is desired. Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills required.  Experience serving as a preceptor for dietetic students or interns is required. Active involvement in professional organizations and service to the dietetics profession is desired. Candidate must meet eligibility requirements to begin and continue working in the United States at the time of appointment.
