Job Description - CNA

Description

Summary

While upholding the Star Valley Health mission, vision and values this key position is responsible to provide quality patient care through performing delegated tasks within the realm of certified training in an efficient and competent manner under the direction of RN. This position will comply with all federal, state and local regulations. This is an at will position.

Job Duties

  • Participates in patient care through procedures within the scope of your training and practice, according to state and federal regulations and facility policies and procedures. 
  • Maintains CNA license, and will perform CNA job duties as deemed appropriate by the supervising nurse.
  • Responsible for answering telephones in a professional manner.
  • Provides care appropriate to condition and age of patient, including pediatric, geriatric and the general patient population.
  • Assists with patient admissions, discharge and transfers.
  • Provides morning care which may include, but is not limited to; bed bath, shower, oral hygiene, combing hair, dressing patients, changing bed linen, straightening room and other general care as necessary throughout the shift.
  • Provides evening care which may include, but is not limited to; hands/face washing as needed, oral hygiene, peri-care, freshening linen, straightening room and other general care as needed.
  • Provides general nursing care such as positioning patients, lifting and turning patients, applying/utilizing special equipment, assisting in use of bedpan, commode and ambulating patients.
  • Prepares patients for meals; serves and removes food trays and assists with meals or feeds patients if necessary.
  • Distributes oral fluids and snacks to patients as applicable.
  • Answers patients' call lights, anticipates patients' needs and makes rounds of assigned patients.
  • Transports patients to various departments for ordered tests/procedures.
  • Obtains and records concurrent patient vital signs which may include; temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, blood pressure and intake-output.
  • Reports patient requests, concerns or complaints to supervising nurse.
  • Observes patient's mental and physical conditions, reports any changes to supervising RN.
  • Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Communicates in a clear and concise manner to nurses, management and medical staff.
  • Attends in-service education programs, as assigned, to learn new treatments, procedures, developmental skills etc.
  • Ability to document patient care in an electronic medical record.
  • Treat patient and families with respect and dignity.
  • Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
  • Attend department and other facility meetings as required by hospital policy
  • Perform other duties as assigned and needs arise.

Abilities & Skills:

  • Strong communication skills, including between colleagues, patients and families.
  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. 
  • Comply with HIPAA and other federal, state and local regulations as well as maintain the highest degree of confidentiality in client and staff matters.
  • Embraces changes and improvements which may enhance the quality, function and appearance of the patient care experience and facility.
  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement program, safety, environmental and infection prevention and control standards.
  • Assists in cost containment through the appropriate ordering and conserving of supplies and equipment.
  • Basic computer knowledge. 

Additional

  • Hearing: Adequate to perform job duties in person and over the telephone. Able to use stethoscope and respond to verbal questions
  • Speaking: Must be able to communicate clearly to patients in person and over the telephone
  • Vision: Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including visual examination of patient and reading information printed sources and computer screen
  • Other: Requires frequent lifting and carrying items weighting up to 50 pounds unassisted, including assisting patients when required. Requires frequent bending, reaching, repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, squatting and sitting, with some heavy lifting, pushing and pulling exerted regularly throughout a regular work shift. Requires exposure to communicable diseases and/or bodily fluids.

Experience & Education:

  • Completion of a state certified CNA training course 
  • Active State of Wyoming CNA Certification
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) is required.
