Role Summary

Set up and operate basic, special purpose, grinding and numerical control (NC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts. Supports activities in the manufacturing environment such as deburring, painting and assembling components.

 

When needed, this position is also responsible for programming CNC machining centers, designing tooling and fixtures for production machining casting complex shaped parts, and implementing optimal, cost-effective manufacturing processes and methods in accordance with product specifications and quality standards.

Machinist IV role:

 


  • Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.

  • Starts and observes machine operation on machines such as mills, lathes, jig bores, grinders, & shapers. Works with lead and trainer for setup requirements.

  • Verifies conformance of finished workpiece to specifications.

  • Seeking out opportunities to learn about all areas of the shop floor and enthusiastically pursuing ongoing self-development in leadership and technical skills that will enhance and continually improve products, processes, and people with a Focus on the Customer.

  • Identifies & escalates issues to lead and/or trainer for timely resolution, including malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining.

  • Measures, marks, and scribes’ dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining.

  • Selects, aligns, & secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, materials, attachments, & accessories on machines such as mills, lathes, jig bores, grinders, & shapers.

  • Set up and operate machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data. Adjust machine controls or control media, as required.

  •  Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.

  • Training of machinists on products, processes, and/or equipment in alignment with the applicable training programs.

  • Delegated Inspection (DI) to verify conformance in conformance of authorized products with applicable quality procedures.

  •  Develop new or improved tooling & manufacturing processes based on print requirements. Works jointly with engineering and tool room to implement.


 

CNC Programmer role:


  • Develop CNC programs for new and existing and assisting machine operators as needed to improve and troubleshoot programs

  • Designs tooling for machining complex parts on 2-4 axis CNC machining centers · Able to operate equipment assigned to program.

  • Supports shop continuous improvement, lean manufacturing and daily management activities (Kata).

  • Support assigned training programs for shop employees and other production engineers as applicable.

  • Perform specific projects under supervision as assigned by manager.

Education/Experience


  • High school diploma, general education degree (GED), or completion of manufacturing-related vocational training.

  • 2-year technical degree in manufacturing preferred.

  • 5 to 10 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  •  Minimum 2 years previous experience as a machinist operating equipment comparable to assigned programming responsibilities.

  • Minimum 5-years previous CNC programming experience in an Aerospace environment.


 

Certificates and Licenses

Lean and/or Six-Sigma Certification (preferred).

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

None required

 

Computer Skills


  • Must be computer literate and knowledgeable in MS Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, and Dynamics 365.

  • At least five years of experience with CAD & CAM programs such as SolidWorks and Mastercam.


 

Language/Mathematical/Reasoning/Mechanical Skills


  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, drawings, procedure manuals, professional journals, government regulations, and technical procedures.

  • Ability to write routine reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers, top management, and employees of the organization.

  • Ability to accomplish common mathematical calculations, in all units of measure.

  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, percent, and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area circumference and volume.

  •  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, geometry, as well as trigonometry.

  •  Must be able to communicate effectively, both written and verbal.

  •  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standard situations.

This position is in a standard manufacturing environment. The noise levels in the work environment are frequently moderate to loud. Safety glasses and safety shoes are required throughout the shop floor, and hearing protection is recommended, with the exception of certain manufacturing areas, which require hearing protection at all times. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, focus adjustment.

 

While performing the duties of this position the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, climb/balance/kneel, reach, talk, hear, and is exposed to moving mechanical equipment and occasionally work near fumes or airborne particles. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds, with assistance.
